Whereas you were drooling at a girl who looked oddly like a canned chicken in junior high, I attended JH in a neighborhood where MS13 and 18th Street territories intersected. Trust me, I'm familiar with the concept.

Now that you mention it, it does have a certain ring to it.

I thought the terms "redneck" and "hillbilly" pretty much had that covered. The only other context I've heard the term in was in regards to white supremacists.

No, see, "redneck" is a term of prideful self-application on the one side, and intended as pejorative by those who are not proud to be rednecks.

"Hillbilly" is pretty archaic, and conjures up images of Li'l Abner, Daisy Mae and the rest. It's a pretty toothless (tee hee) general term anymore that is used harmlessly and even fondly as a description of poor, rural people in such places as West Virginia, southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and western Tennessee. Unsophisticated views of all Southerners tend to identify them generically as "hillbillies."

You've probably heard "peckerwood" connected with "white supremacist" by those who live in vague fear and are looking for a way to comfort themselves by applying dismissive, trivializing labels to those who are perceived to threaten them.

True enough. But from a consumerist perspective, I prefer Russian products. They just plain taste better. I was a tad young to remember a lot of details, but I do remember that chicken soup in Russia had a very full, pleasant smell. Here it barely smells at all.

A few years back my parents went to Russia to visit. Somehow (which is another story), my mother (god bless her soul) managed to sneak two large garlands of dried mushrooms through customs on the way back. As soon as she took them out of the bag, the whole house was filled with that magical, forest scent of mushroom that I hadnt felt for years. Maybe its different for folks in rural areas, but IMHO the food we get here is calorically rich, but tastes like processed ass.

Pas got to this one first, but it's a requirement for growth for good 'ole yellow dent #2 field corn. It doesn't affect taste because this corn is largely livestock feed, ethanol fodder or ground for use in ingredients. It's not your (fictitious) great grandfather's sweet corn sold by the road side stand that you would eat off the cob. Field corn tastes like pasty drek.

In the 1940s, they were thrilled to be getting a yield of 50 bushels/acre. It's a freakin' miracle of science that we can feed so many more on so little land.

I dont suppose the chemicals affect the livestock in any way.

Incidentally, I doubt I will ever get used to US grown corn. Corn in the old country was much less sweet and a lot less watery.

No. The 'chemicals' are basically concentrated manure used to concentrate the plant growth. Bovine effluvium is pretty inefficient stuff in terms of nitrogen yield/ kg. Anhydrous ammonia is the shiznit. It's the same biochemical effect, but one is largely 'filler' and the other is what the plant is really looking for.

We're talking field corn here, oh great commentator on matters agricultural. You know. Gasohol. Livestock feed. Corn meal. You can't eat that stuff unless they grind it up and process it or feed it to something that can become meat or crank out eggs or milk.

Growing up in a place like Iowa gives you a pretty hard, gritty view of those waves of grain, amber or otherwise...

How does the process differ for corn intended for human consumption?

Bushel yield per acre is not as important in 'sweet corn'. Yellow dent #2 is a starch commodity-a play on complex carbohydrate produced by the corn plant. Sweet corn (a very small minority of corn produced) is hybridized to produce so much sucrose in the plant in order to make the taste sweet. Different critter altogether.

Thanks CB.

I totally get the consumerist angle. But the thing is...I'm sure pas will back me on this...ass sells. You can keep your magical musrooms (unless you're in CA-then there's a 'first mover' advantage for magical mushrooms), as there's little hope of feeding a hungry world with memories of magical smells and ye olde memories.

Actually, the guys themselves referred to themselves with that term. But, again, that was JH days, so we're obviously not dealing with mental giants.

How about the term "hick"?

Cant say I agree. Its a sad thought for me that my kids and grandkids might never know what chicken soup is supposed to smell like on a cold, snowy day.

Heeheehee. One of the great things about that movie is ole Charlie gettin' wound up like his discovery's a big deal, and everybody around him lookin' at him like, "Yeah, so what?"

You could maybe see some of the same thing with a lot of people watching the end of "Planet of the Apes."

Charlie made a whole acting career out of gettin' all wound up and goin' over the top...

Yep, I prefer my little pleasures to what feeds the masses, but what you gonna do? Like Winston and Julia in 1984, you'd like to hide, have sex and drink fresh tea with sugar, but the world's reality is pseudo stew and victory gin.

Ah, so you're a sensible man. Not many of those in the Land of 10,000 Mosquito Breeding Ponds. I have often made the mistake of believing that when you're drunk is the ideal time to START arguing philosophy.

G'night, dawg.

How about the term "hick"?

EZ. From "hickory," a hardwood plentiful in Southern wooded areas used for such things as axe handles, wagon axles, wheel spokes and the like.

Hmmm ... since went to bed at 3am, I had the intention of hugging the pillow for a looong time this morning. That was not meant to be.

At 8am, my opponent informed (via SMS) that I had a turn in my inbox ...

This game is dangerously addictive ...

Of course, I had some incentive to get up and do my turn - I had to set up my CV sneak attack on Truk. With both KB and Mini KB in DEI, I thought it was time to send a message ... . It will be very interesting to see the outcome when I get the turn back later today ...
