I think 95% of all possible approaches already have been tried out Monter...the only thing that can be done is to do it better with a different approach

- I don't think it's possible to win by conquering large land masses; the goal is simply to play better.
A strategic and tactical game of chess were both players try to get the upper hand through shifting advantages and positions on the board.

By attacking in Australia and defending well in the Central Pacific Andy will be forced to look for another theater for his first offensives in 42-43. This is undoubtedly Java - Sumatra and mainly Burma. My challenge will be to counter this threat.
- Still remember Al's Java offensive, struggled hard to prevent him from capturing the entire island and was only saved by the gong as a sudden change in leadership caused a reverse in tactics on the Allied side.

Now I know that a last stand at Bandoeng will be hard to rot out

Everything is still proceeding according to plan; got around a year to determine whether all of Oz really cab be captured and if it's worth it! Nothing likea constructive and clear cut plan

- Really don't have a clue about how many troops the Allies got in Oz, if I can squeeze them into some shrinking pockets and starve them a bit I'm positive that we can make a dent in Andy's armory. The clue will be to always attack the weak spots with overwhelming force, bypassing the strongholds - something I think is possible because of the vast distances.

Need a suitable code name for the Oz invasion; Operation Back of Bourke

When Andy is strong enough to take it back we'll leave by the back door and let him spend 6 months cleaning up the place.
With some luck that'll se the end of 43!

Tennant Creek is a major victory as the Allied troops caught in the bag are probably dead. I'd seriously consider halting soon, though. The Aussies have a lot of troops in the SE. You may be able to secure the Townsville area as well. As you note, the principle value in the whole op is that Andy will have to spend lots of time chucking you out and by then he will be staring at a heavily entrenched outer perimeter of Japan's "normal" defensive line.

PS You are right to anticipate a counterattack in Burma. On the AE map, it seems Burma is hard for either side to defend. Too easy to sneak out of the jungle and cut the roads/railroads with small forces.

PPS All of that cautionary advice notwithstanding, this is glorious!

Some action in Burma;

If Andy goes onto the offensive in Burma in 42 I'll be tempted to land a powerful army behind him and attemtp to trap him.
Only time will show if this is realistic.

where to defend? Not in a clear hex I would say!

Do you have enough vehicle points in pool to get the armoured division at full strength? I know I don't in my game, and I already recieved the second guards division (that arrives on 1st of april) at 1/3 strength for some reason. I'm assuming i didn't have enough veh points to fill out its motorized support or whatever. It was quite annoying as I had planned to use it immediately to root out the final pockets of resistance in PI.

Hm, got some 350 vehicle points - should be 400 when the tank div is due in a couple of weeks.
Not sure how many are needed, 400? I'll take what I get and send it to Burma with replacements on - then it can flesh out
while waiting for the bogey men.

Defending in Burma is difficult; the bases are out in the open and if I defend in the jungle Andy will just speed past it and
envelop Rangoon. So we have to stand at Mandalay and force an enemy shock attack. Then build strong forts in a few key bases and mount a dedicated defense of Rangoon while covering the path south. No easy task, defense in depth is needed no doubt.

Will be hard to bag the 12k troops north of Tennant Creek - but will certainly try.
Agree that capturing Oz is a wet dream, but until Andy proves it I will try; so we'll make him wary and force him to shift troops and supplies to bolster his defenses - and for his sake I hope the KB doesn't intercept his convoys

Here are a couple of scenarios:
1. Andy stands at Townsville - I land 3000 AV at Rockhampton = Andy rails to Brissy faster than a oiled grease monkey.
2. Andy stands at Brisbane - I land 3000 AV south of Brissy and sends a dozen tank regiments and support troops west and south of his defenses =....will Andy stand and fight?
3. I will keep an eye on Perth and drop by if defenders are moved south

I'm curious to how Andy will handle these challenges. If / when we get bogged down I'll pull back to a defensive perimeter and send the troops elsewhere.

Ok we're putting a hurt on Bandoeng BUT I now got 2600 AV, 2 army HQ + and Area Army HQ.
All with fairly high prep levels and our assault value is still divided by 2.6 while the enemy's is increased 3 times.

This force is larger than the ones that captured Bataan and Singapore!

1 Area Army HQ
2 Corps HQ's
4 full crack divisions
10 various regiments
7 arty units

No doubt ALL allied players will retreat to Bandoeng from now on. Really doubt the Dutch would have been able to put up such
a momentus effort in 42. All hopes of a major invasion of e.g. India would have to be delayed until this resistance nest can be subdued.

Will launch a deliberate attack every 3rd day from now on; now sure when the odds will swing but if we cause 4-5k casualties in each attack it is only a matter of a few weeks at most.

The allies actually get quite a bit, and if you go south of Brisbane, more reinforcements are generated (they arrive at Aden though). It is fairly easy to get a lot of troops to Oz from India and the US unless you cause Andy to divert his forces to someplace else. In one game, my foe invaded Darwin and I stopped him at Katherine with 2 Australian divisions (from India) plus 1 US Army and one Marine division and loads of artillery/armor. The problem with the vast distances in Oz is that the medium and heavy bombers will kill your armor when they are out in the open. I have eliminated several armor units in Oz-bombed to extinction-with B-25/26s. Good luck in Oz but I think you will reach a point where you cant go much further.

Your Oz op should be called Operation Vegemite.

I had almost managed to suppress the existence of "vegemite" since I got back home from my Oz stay, thx for reminding me Mynok

Allied units fight quite well in Oz, quite different then in India...
If Andy had brought 2 divs to Katherine I would have cut them of if he had made a stand - didn't you get surrounded or did the Japs come light handed?

Think the new patch will reduce ground interdiction further - can need it cause those B-17's cause a lot of damage despite poor weather and heavy CAP.

Ok we're almost ready to invade Cooktown - takes forever to march in so a crack regiment will land tomorrow.
Warming up the defenders and another regiment is marching in from Normanton - can help with the capture of Cairns later on.

Saved this one for last!
- Sent 2 raiders to scout and look for easy targets near Kiwi land.
Yesterday I spotted an unidentified enemy TF and intercepted it today.
Guess if this was a surprise; a huuge Allied surface TF - 6 cruisers and 13 destroyers.

Our raiders charged into the confused enemy ranks - landed a 6" shell on the bridge of the heavy
cruiser Australia, turned around and managed to retreat!

This was very interesting and I told Andy that this would probably result in another version of the chicken run!-)
The annoying thing is that I turned the KB around 2 days ago; didn't think I would find anything here as Andy saw me coming Well, he doesn't know that and will probably get his chiefs to burn boiler oil at a high rate tomorrow

Remember that some of my tricks only works for the dark side of the fence
- Pretty sure you're well qualified to bring the war to the enemy!
I'll gladly take credit for all your victories but defeats are on your tab!

What's new today; Cooktown falls and we can move on Cairns and put Townsville under siege.
Me thinks Andy will either move south with his troops or make a major stand. AF size = 7 now.

Andy is shipping troops to Australia; no doubt about that - he can do that but I will reserve the right to cut of
his supply convoys later on when we complete our land campaigns.

Anyone knows how much supplies and fuel Andy needs to ship in each month to keep operating?

supplies won´t be an issue for him I guess. This if he moves them around with the "draw supply" feature and it isn´t cut off in some base. You start with a couple of hundred thousand supplies, get more each day from the industry and if he shipped some convoys full of supply in then he probably has somewhere between 500 and 750.000 supplies.

Hm, I thought Oz was dependent on imports - isn't that correct?

The only thing Andy will be lacking in AE is fuel then; ac also have to be shipped in unless they can make the flight from the nearest island.

not dependent on the import of supplies. Like I´ve said, there are hundreds of thousand supplies to start with and the industry there creates a couple of thousand each day as long as fuel is available. But supplies, no, he won´t have supply issues (if he´s able to move it to where he needs them). He will have far more supplies than you!

He will have big fuel issues though. Australia sucks up lots of fuel... If you isolate it it becomes very hard to operate a big fleet from there.

It's a slow build up process in North Eastern Oz right now; need to get some real bases, join forces and bring in more supplies and fuel before we're ready for the next round.

It's an interesting time; we can do as we please and are mostly winning all over the place!
Andy doesn't make a lot of big mistakes so I'll just be working towards securing a best possible perimeter defense while staying on the offensive until early-mid 43. From then on it will be a staged withdrawal with hit and run counter-attacks.

Well to be fair on the Lightnings, in every encounter they outnumbered your fighters... 2:1 against the Zero.. and only lightly shot up two undefended bomber units :) I'd expect that many P40E to do that much damage as well.

The P-38 is no wonder weapon.

Cheers

Rob

At Bandoeng, I wonder how the Dutch stayed in good supply condition so long that they could maintain decent adjusted AV (I realize the terrain helped) and re-build forts. Is there any chance the fort level 2 was a bug or FOW? They went from 0 lvl to lvl 2 and back down to lvl 0 over the course of three attacks, and you never got better than 1-to-1 odds until the final blow. Also strange that merely shock attacking had such a dramatic effect on your AV. Hard to fathom, but congrats on the hard won victory.

They have a service rating of 3 so are vulnerable in front line airbases. Smart Allied player will use them from large bases to the rear. Probably best in high sweeps.

I think in AE the P47 is going to turn out to be the Allied uber fighter. Fast and well armed and I think it is about the onlly Allied army fighter in the game with a service rating of 1.

I've also been wondering about Bandoeng; was 18k supplies in the base when I captured it.
No answers to fort levels, didn't think FOW applied to this?

When you play AE you immediately get a feeling for the "quality" of the opponents ac.
Fighting the Flying Tigers in P-40's you know results depend on numbers and surprise; everything can happen.

When my best Zero jocks meet up with an even number of P-38's (probably manned by good pilots but not as hot as 80+)
I know we're going to loose unless I sweep in superior numbers. Yesterday those 8 P-38's shot down 2 fighters and 4 bombers without friendly losses. That is a great feat when facing 9 crack enemy fighters and dozens of 2E's - I just remember all to well when this happened the last time. - As soon as my top notch pilots are gone the P-38's will double their kill ratios.

What I miss is the Zero bonus; in the first 6 months it is the Allies that should struggle to figure out how to handle the agile Jap fighters. Then it would be acceptable that kill ratios first evened out around mid 42 to late 42 before slowly increasing in favor of the Allies as the best Jap pilots are lost.

Perhaps the P-38 isn't "Uber" - but it makes the Zero obsolete already from 01/42. How right can that be....

Don't even wanna think about the "Jug" - I know what to expect in 44-45

Take heart - there are very few P-38's during the first 10 or so months of 1942. Even after that there are distinctly fewer than in WITP.

From the AAR's I'm reading the Allies are having a hard time with the nimble IJ fighters in early '42. I suspect you are experiencing a combination of the very few P-38's also being piloted by the best pilots he has. It would be useless to throw them away with the less-skilled average pilots the Allies have early on.
