Trying to find a thread again which I saw which had comments about best radars etc but couldn't. Could someone therefore please help on which radars/type of night fighter are actually going to get some interceptions done?

I've just got to November 43 now so will soon have available the He219 and the new Bf110. I know nothing about airborne radars but note that both have the fug220 (which I assume is better than the Fugs currently carried by the older Bf110 and the Ju88C), but moreover I see that the new Bf110 also carries "Naxos" but the He219 has "Flensburg". Ideally I would streamline my fighter force by going with as small a number of different aircraft as possible, but could someone please advise if I need both of these types, or if one is better than the other?

Edit: and does the effectiveness or type of radar ever change in the older night fighters, I do I basically have to get a whole new aircraft?

basic models should be FuG 202, 212 and then the 220, each gets better as they go along (there some late war models also)

as time goes on, planes will upgrade there "goodies" the unit page, will show the default model, until, most of the planes have the upgrade, then will show the upgraded model (IE a 110 Unit that has FuG 202, will upgrade as new sets are in stock, some planes in the unit may have FuG 212, but will not show on the unit page until most have them)(not sure of the numbers needed for the upgrade shows, if it is over 50%, or if it needs to be higher or if it needs to be all, that is a coding thing)

some of the other gear, are detectors, Naxos, Flenburg pick up signals from RAF radars, detectors and are able to home in on those, instead of the plane itself

(H2S was seen as a lucky charm to a lot of BC crews, and they would leave it on, as they never got attacked while it was running, but the LW was able to make a detector, that tracked it, if it was on, it could be tracked, hassle for the BC Crews, it only took one time, to ruin the idea that the plane was never attacked while it was on, High Command would issue orders that it was only to be turned on, when close to the target, or for pathfinders, as a snap shot to be sure of where they were, but Crews didn't believe them)

found this information on the forum
Careful, these info is from the readme of the old Talonsoft game. not sure what still applies; but nice overview anyhow.

Electronic warfare devices can be found on various aircraft and perform various functions. Below is a list of each device and a brief description of its function. The "effectiveness" sections gives you an indication of the performance differences between the different devices.

Naxos - radar detector, carried by German Night Fighters
Used to home in on H2S radar, which is commonly carried by British pathfinder bombers.
max detection range: 10 miles
effectiveness: 50

FuG 202 - aircraft radar, earliest version of the German airborne radar
Airborne radar fitted in Axis night-fighters.
max detection range: 2 miles
effectiveness: 8* [the asterisks (*) indicates that this radar's effectiveness is
greatly reduced by 'Window', which were clouds of aluminum strips used to jam Axis
search radar.]

FuG 212 - aircraft radar
Similar to FuG 202, improved range and effectiveness.
max detection range: 2.5 miles
effectiveness: 9*

FuG 220 SN-2 - aircraft radar
Airborne radar fitted in Axis night-fighters. Immune to jamming by 'Window'.
max detection range: 4 miles
effectiveness: 40

FuG 240 Berlin - aircraft radar
derived from a captured H2S radar. Immune to jamming by 'Window'.
max detection range: 5 miles
effectiveness: 50
[Note: Not available until 1945]

AI Mk.IV - aircraft radar
Airborne radar fitted in Allied night-fighters.
max detection range: 3 miles
effectiveness: 30

AI Mk.VII - aircraft radar
Airborne radar fitted in Allied night-fighters.
max detection range: 4 miles
effectiveness: 40

AI Mk.X - aircraft radar
Airborne radar fitted in Allied night-fighters.
max detection range: 9 miles
effectiveness: 50

H2S - aircraft navigation radar
Airborne ground-mapping radar fitted in British pathfinder bombers.
effectiveness: 55

H2X - aircraft navigation radar
Airborne ground-mapping radar fitted in American pathfinder bombers.
effectiveness: 60

Oboe - aircraft navigation system
Airborne navigation system using radio beams for precision bombing in poor visibility.
max range: 300 miles from friendly base (the beams are actually projected from the airfield and are effective only within the indicated miles; any aircraft performing missions outside their Oboe range will not benefit from the navigation system).
effectiveness: 65

Serrate - radar detector
Used to home in on FuG 212 radar.
Somewhat effective against other airborne radars.
max detection range: 10 miles
effectiveness: 50 vs FuG 212 (10 vs other airborne radars)

Serrate IV - radar detector
Used to home in on FuG 220 SN-2 radar.
Also effective against other airborne radars.
max detection range: 10 miles
effectiveness: 50 vs FuG 220 (40 vs other airborne radars)

Jostle - radio jammer
Used to jam radio frequencies used by Axis ground controllers directing night-fighter
interceptions.
max range: 100 miles
effectiveness: 20
[Note: If a night fighter is within 100 miles from a unit with Jostle radio jammers,
its communication ability might be jammed, and you will lose control of the unit
for as long as the jamming is in effect.]

Mandrel - radar jammer
Used to jam radar frequencies used by Axis ground search radars.
max range: 100 miles
effectiveness: 20
[Note: Effective use of these jammers is represented on the map with small red circles appearing around Axis radar stations.]

Piperack - radar jammer
Used to jam FuG 220 SN-2 airborne radar.
Also effective against other airborne radars.
max range: 20 miles
effectiveness: 15 vs FuG 220 (10 vs other airborne radars)

ELINT receivers - radio intelligence equipment
Used to gather information on Axis radio and radar transmissions.
Such information eventually led to development of devices to jam radars and disrupt Axis communications.
max range: 100 miles
effectiveness: 25

Where does Electronic Warfare Come Into Play Most Often in BTR? Although electronic warfare is used throughout all the campaigns in BTR, it's most significant in the Nachtjagd Scenarios dealing with Bomber Command and German night fighters. Especially during Nachtjagd III, you will have the opportunity to use all of your aircrafts' radar devices to their full extent.

Thank you for the information, very helpful.

Doesn't mention Flesburg though... which the weapon database says is carried by He219.

One strange thing I noticed is that if my Bf110 unit has the FuG 212 according to its unit overview, and I add extra cannons to the planes, switching them to the R-type, then the unit will lose its radar upgrade and degrade itself to the FuG 202!

in real life, that shouldn't happen like that, but, this is a game, so I see how it is doing so

really, would say, you should make that change early on, when you make a Pak change, you really are going to a different model of the plane, and not just adding something to the plane

the same will happen to the Allies, if you change a plane with Drop tanks and give it bombs, then go back to drop tanks, you go back to default tanks, and not what you may of upgraded to
