1) In several of the games I've played I've noticed that the IJN's carrier forces would retire off the scene after a few turn's worth of maneuver / combat, then reappear later in the game. In every case they seem to retire towards the direction of Truk. I've read somewhere that the IJN's destroyers have short legs. Is this early exit due to having to return to Truk to refuel?

2) Does the AI controlled carrier forces ever provide LR Cap to other TFs within range?

3) Has anyone ever seen a strike decimated by Cap before it made it to target?

1. fuel also to rest/receive new aircraft
2. not that I have observed
3. Yes mine from both sides of the fence. Usally the first strikes I launch in carrier battles end up unescorted/lightly escorted torpedo planes that get slaughtered. Hopefully the later strikes are well formed. I often wish they would launch the large strike first and the small ones second. Then again this might be the case only these "mini" strikes are fragments of the larger one that become detached and arrive first (wish they would arrive after my well escorted strike) (In one carrier battle 3 complete groups of IJN pilots (Kates) were completly destroyed before the large strike arrived and sank every enemy carrier. (It hurt seeing all those excellent pilots go down in flames without making a single attack. I kept yelling "Turn back boys, get out of there"

Interestingly, I've seen the opposite effect mentioned by Mogami. That is, an unescorted strike reaches the TF first, gets through the CAP, and inflicts damage; then, a well escorted flight arrives, and promptly gets chewed up and manages to score no hits at all.

It's happend to both the Allied (me) and the Japanese (AI) in my Green Hell scenario.

Don't think there's anything wrong with it, I think it was just luck of the draw. Thought it was interesting though. . . .

Kind of made me want to keep the fighters home . . . just as an experiment.

2. Couple turns ago my allied LBA escorts ran into LR-Cap from a AI carrier TF protecting another carrier TF which we were attacking.

3. During the Coral Sea scenerio, the Japs once launched a 2-3 CV series of strikes against our carrier TF. According to the combat reports, we shot down every escort, every dive bomber, and every torpedo plane in maybe 4 strikes. Yes, fog of war was on. But we didn't get hurt, either. That was some effective CAP and AA for an early war allied task force. Or maybe it was just my leadership.

That story gets better every time I tell it...
