Larry and I are playing the latest version 4.0 of SPzAbt653’s Bulge scenario “Autumn Fog”. I am playing the Germans and Larry is playing the Allies this time. Steve has cleaned up and improved various aspects of this fine scenario so Larry and thought we would start over and switch sides. I will post my overall plan in a few turns after it is apparant to Larry what I plan to do.

For those of you who would like to see the starting German position before turn 1 a situation map can be found at:

At the end of the German turn 3 5. Panzer has punched a hole in the Beho area. Of course there must be U.S. units still blocking which I cannot spot:

One of the interesting concepts of the Autumn Fog scenario is that the German player can activate either or the German 15. Armee (in the north) or the 1. Armee in the south, armies that were not in the historical fight. Of course this also activates additional Allied forces. He can also assign different starting locations the the Armee Group B reserve divisions to the German north, center (historical) or south. This makes this scenario different from other Bulge scenarios which require the players to use the historical deployment. I have chosen to activate 15. Armee in the very north of the map (closest to Antwerp) and attack with it.

The screen shot below shows the first turn of the attack, before Larry has had a chance to react.

So um..........hey you guys.  I finally finished the Allied part of turn 6.  Here's the AAR for turn 6:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/kmmund2jwni/august Fog Game 2 Turn 6 AAR.html

All the british stuff in the far north came out of garrison mode finally so we're back in business.  I managed to plug all the holes that Randy tore in my lines.  Well, at least I did this time.  Next time might be the breakthrough he's hoping for.

I'm finally finished with the Allied side of turn 7.  Here's the AAR:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/cnhjknfyntt/august Fog Game 2 Turn 7 AAR.html

I did some counterattacking and Randy's stuff actually had to back up in a couple of places.  I think maybe I'm getting the hang of this game.

I finally finished the Allied side of turn 8.  You can find the AAR here:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/goznznhnkzg/august Fog Game 2 Turn 8 AAR.html

I did a boatload of counterattacking and had some limited success.

So um..........hey you guys.....Randy and I are playtesting the August Fog scenario and we've successfully determined that the Axis Player should not release the northern group unless and until he has sufficient forces up there to deal with the flood of Allied units that doing that [ releasing the northern group ]  will produce.  And so we're going to start over and this time I'll be the Axis ( and I won't release the aforementioned group ) and Randy will be the Allies.  So I'm going to start working on my turn 1 moves.  Stay tuned.

Hey guys, since no one objected, I'm working on adjusting the German artillery as outlined in the previous posts. I can have it done by tomorrow if you want to wait on your restart. Just let me know and I'll send the file to you.

My general opinion of releasing the German 15th or 1st Army is to not do it unless you have the Allies on the ropes. I say that because in the north you will be going into the teeth of the US 9th Army and British XXX Corp. In the south you will be running into Patton's 3rd Army. In the north, I kinda think you have to be close to Liege so that the Allies are stretched out and on the defensive, then you might safely release the 15th Army (and any reserve units that you have hidden in the area can be added) in order to add a sock in the jaw after the blow to the belly.

I told Randy to expect my turn 1 moves but I didn't actually give him an ETA. So unless he complains in writing I guess I'll just wait for an email from you Steve dude. I can always post the copy you send so that others can download that bad boy. I'll prepend the days date onto the file so that we'll know which version it is. I'm getting a bunch of versions of various files. Unfortunately, I deleted a lot of the old version of most of them.

I made a map change so I wanted to make you guys aware of it. There is a new town called Grupont with a bridge, and a road connecting it to St. Hubert. This was the historical approach that Pz. Lehr took on its way to Rochefort.

Okie dokie....we've started over with me as the Germans.  I did a bunch of attacks ( 5 combat rounds ) and gained some hexes and mostly just pushed Allied units back.  Gained a bridge or two.  Maybe I can make some REAL progress next turn.  The AAR is parked right here:

Steve:

I agree that to release 15 Armee early in the game and then assign my Group B reserves there was probably a mistake. I ran into a wall of Allied troops. Perhaps someone more skilled at attacking could have pulled it off. Again, perhaps thats' why the Germans did not historically take that approach.

Randy

I don't think so, there are probably too many Allied divisions in that area at the start.
