Yeah, it's very easy. I really just posted it because I thought it's a rare and a cool picture. You don't see most of the Kido Butai in one picture very often. Even more so in colour.

HIJMS Akagi Flight Deck probably in the Ceylan raid. HIJMS Kaga was at sasebo in dry dock under repairs. Only 5 carriers with 4 battleships in the picture.

Yup. It is the Akagi soon after leaving Port Stirling, Celebes Island, for the raid on Ceylon. 26th March, 1942. According to the Kure Maritime Museum the warships in the background are – from left to right, Soryu, Hiryu, Hiei, Kirishima, Haruna, Kongô, Zuikaku and Shokaku.

Nice colour photos in your source String.

I've post a link to that site before. I am usually opposed to colorization, but whoever that guy is, he does a great job. I wonder what process or software he is using. I wish I could read Kanji (though it is searchable in English, crudely)

I think i've posted the link here myself as well. Regardless I think that's a rather new addition to the website. It's also interesting in that it manages to show the slope of the flight deck. I didn't even realise that Akagi had it bent like this before I saw this photo and did a little bit of research

Read that the padding was the crews hammocks used for protection against enemy fire and the canted flight deck was thought to help facilitate landings and takeoffs.

You know, I would really enjoy using that picture for my footer.  What is the link for it?

It is as you say, unless it is not Port Stirling but Staring Bay, just to the south of Kendari, Celebes. Haughty picture and fantastic link.

There's also one ship behind Shokakus, but what is that? A cruiser maybe?

What's the thing to the right and onother one on the top of the bridge structure.

It looks like two round metal bars on a stick. Some kind of (radar) receiver? A sending device even? it looks like they could spin around.

I at first assumed this was a new thread, so when I clicked to read, I started at the top.  I was delighted when I saw my old opponent Q-Ball had contributed...but then I glanced at the date and learned his post was two years back.

Darn!  I'm still crossing my fingers that Q-Ball returns one day, like the Prodigal Son returned from WitE land.  )No doubt even as we speak he's engaging in riotous living from which he must eventually repent.)

I didn't notice the date either. But still a great photo. I'd never seen it before. I thought the Japanese used wooden flight decks like the US, but that doesn't seem to be wood, is it??? Hal
