Not sure what to say. Some people rave about the first one, others don't. The general consensus (froma what I remember) was that if you wanted a fun ahistorical game, then it was worth it. If you wanted a strategic history game, then forget it.

History gurus didn't really like it from what I gathered. I played the demo, but it never really sucked me in enough to make me want to buy it.

As for the second one, I believe it's much more anticipated. I will certainly be giving the demo a try.

Thank you for the reply JD.
I have not DL the demo yet as i could not find out if it had any DRM.
But i will keep looking, the gold version is cheap so i could buy it or skip straight to the second if that turns out to be good & again not have DRM.

The first one was great and the most fun I've ever had with a wargame of such scale. It can also play out historically but is not programmed to that way every single time. The more you play it the different avenues of the war outcome you can see and be a part of. It's also turn based and imho much better than the Hearts of Iron series by Parapatch. I plan to buy MH 2 as soon as it's released.

Just a cd key you have to put in that's either on the back of the manual or in the cd case

Yes on a scale between grognard (War In The Pacific) to casual (Advanced Tactics for DS) it falls somewhere in the middle. The combat is about attack power, and the side with the most stuff generally wins. The economy is more involved and you have a chance to expand it.

First one was too much economy and not enough wargame, in my opinion.

MH was originally designed as a teaching aid for history students: MH1 still had that capability by generating a national file that could be graded by the teacher.

MH1 was something like a turn-based HoI, although combat wasn't nearly as interesting, as one might expect.

I'd disagree unlike HOI's where you might watch a combat for 5 minutes you get instant information in the turn based combat of MH1 and MH2 I'm sure. Never saw the reason to sit and watch a battle for 5 minutes when you could have the results in 5 seconds. HOI's are uninteresting battles to me and I'd much rather have more time for gaming than watching the ai play against itself in make believe 2-5 minute actions.

MH1 had a very intuitive interface and i really liked the deeper economic model and the chance to start in 1936 and develop economically as well as militarily. It has a pseudo markey where you can trade food, goods, arms, oil and metals. The value and availibility changes with the seasons and war alliances. One week per turn. Very moddable with a fairly large selection of mods to download from their website.

Definitley have MH2 on the list for this year.

I had know idea Joe D. that it was designed as a teaching aid.
Maybe i might learn something? My brain works like one peace of information in & two out.

Well i dont mind the focus being in favour of economics...it will make a nice change of pace. I am enjoying playing my first few games from here....still so many to go.
Thank you Max 86!

For me, Making History I came fairly close to being as addictive as any of the Civilization entries(well, not that close). Making History is on my computer today, and has been since it was released. I have already placed my pre-order for MH2.

Thanks for a reminder about Alpha Centauri DampSquib. I spent the overnight hours looking, and just found my copy of the game. It actually installed and is working. It's as much fun today as it was 50 years ago.

Yes, originally it was designed to teach WW II "hands-on"; I recall that somewhere in the MH manual there were instructions on how to generate a historical file for the teacher to evaluate.

Therein lay the problem with MH, it wasn't intended to be a game and it was never as good as SC2 or HoI2 or even CEAW, too much of a chasm. I don't know where they have gone with MH2 but hopefully they have focused on he game aspect.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I will say that MH had a very clever economic system (that is what suckered me into buying MH), but the other aspects of the game were rather basic. It seems like a high tech Risk remake. But, hey, I suppose Risk can be fun too.

I asked a question over at Wargamer about what was new in MHII.  Thought others would be interested so here is a link I was provided.

Seems very interesting...

Doesn't look very good to me. I think I'll pass on this one. Wish I could of used the same restraint when HOI 3 came out.
