One of a series, I believe for "Lite Beer" from Miller, mid to late 70's. Rodney Dangerfield getting no respect in all of them.

Hi all,

Good morning - Tithe.

I know that politics are no-no here at "THE THREAD!!!" but I would just like to ask our USA brethren "over the big pond" regarding new healthcare reform... I hope this is not inappropriate...

So... what does it mean for ordinary citizens? What would that reform mean to you guys (for example - would you have to pay more to insurance companies)?

Thanks in advance!

To be entirely honest Leo , we don't completely know what this new bill means. The discussion , debate and until yesterday the bill it's self have been entirely done behind closed doors. I've been a "DC watcher" my whole life , and I've NEVER seen a political act done in such secrecy. Even having friends who work on Capitol hill hasn't helped much , as most congressional staff has been "kept out of the loop". Even members of the US military have said to me wistfully , "I wish we could keep secrets like that". So I really don't know what the bill will truly mean to me. But for a Democracy with elected representation to have done this or any act in such secrecy , and with so many legal and parliamentary tricks , scares the bejesus out of me!

The irony is that the bill was signed 245 years to the day after "The Stamp act". That surely can not be a good sign.

Some of the more important stipulations of the law are that 1) by 2014 all people in the US must be insured either themselves, by the employer or by the government if they qualify 2) health insurance carriers can no longer cancel your policy if you begin to cost them too much 3) health insurance carriers can no longer deny you coverage based on a preexisting condition and 4) kids can be carried on a parents' insurance until age 26 (whereas before it was 21, so kids were without health coverage through most of college).

However, what the actual results will be, how fast, if at all, they will happen and what the economic ramifications will be remains to be seen. As it is, an appeal was filed within an hour of it being signed into law.

Yuri have seen the bill? Did you get a hold of a copy somehow? We've (most people I know in the DC area) have been trying to do that. Is it on line somewhere? It was promised that all legislation would be on line 5 days before signing , but I don't know anyone whose found it. If you or anyone out there can point me in the right direction, I'd be very , very greatful.

No kidding! And I'm supposed to start my househunting road trip! I've put off departure till Monday, and I'm babying it with ibopropen and a heating pad. It seems to be a problem with tension vice an actual pull, so I'm pretty sure things will be alright. I'm just going to force myself to take it easy this weekend.

No , he's right. And he's wrong. If no one goes any further than we have , and don't use this as a precedence for more of this kind, I think we'll be alright. I find his language more disturbing then our "skirting the edge" on the no politics rules. It's a matter of knowing where the boundries are , and NOT crossing them. We got close to the edge , in a way that should make all of us nervous (I know that I was , and tried to answer Leo's question from a historical/sociological point of view , not My personal opion on the laws and parties involved). And nervous we should be. We should all be nervous when approaching that line. And hopefully all recognize where the boundries are. (And I hope that I recognize the boundries and haven't crossed over due to a pain medication induced haze! ).

Agreed. If I had a dime for every time a particular someone 'skirted the edge' of impolitic, brusque or downright affrontery language without such a massive overreaction from the THREAD denizens, I'd be a rich man.

Now, having said that, I'll go back to my OP on the topic and edit out my final comment / emoticon.

Steve,

I've dispatched several IJN cruisers towards your lines. They are wishing you well by conferring ancient Japanese remedy for backaches. Please do not interfere with their special delivery, as it may disrupt the 'chi' that they hope to bring to you. They wish to provide you with (eternal) peace, harmony and remove your backache, headache and all else that ails you. Soon you will be blissfully adrift, do not resist.
