I have never been a fan of real time. The constant point and click does not appeal to me. Having said that I have been looking for a replacement for orion 2 for a long time. I bought Armada and in fairness I haven't played it since the update but it left me kind of flat. ( hooked on BTR as Germans right now turn 170). I love the space 4x format. What does everyone think? Thanks for any imput.

Jimbo,

You will be fine in this game - you can setup every event to auto-pause and set it to crawl at 0.25x speed and pause whenever you like and take as long as you want to make changes or put in orders. In my opinion with those settings you will probably find that you have more time than you need. The game adjusts to each player's pace quite well in my experience.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik:

How do you set the Auto-pause? (One of the things I like best about EU is that you can set the game to pause when certain types of messages appear).

Set the options to suggest under automation and when the game pops up a message asking for your input it auto pauses.

The game will automatically pause whenever you open a screen too. So no need to worry about that.

So you're saying that whenever I open the Diplomacy screen the game pauses? Sweet.

Same here, in the game options you can set what events generate a pop-up. Every pop-up pauses the game automatically until you respond.

I have never like RTS games. However, this game has the best of both worlds. With being able to do anything while paused, you can take your time to manage everything. With the other items Erik and Hadberz mentioned, it really is the best of RTS and TBS combined.

Do not fear. It is NOT a click fest like Star Craft. This one does RTS right, as does Sins of a Solar Empire and the RTT Starfleet Command series (except III - too dumbed down).

As Erik pointed out, YOU set the pace and the feel of the game. YOU get to decide how you play the game. DW does NOT play you. But, Do be ready as others have noted if you start a war. If you are not ready, well, the scenario would be akin to a Babylon situation where the Shadows AND the First Ones ALL ganged up on you. So, until you have the power, do not yank anyone's chain ;)

Although I like the fact that the game autopauses when a screen opens. It would be nice to be able to unpause it as well. There are certain bits of info (such as cargo and resource levels) that are only available in screens such as expansion planner, and it would be quite nice to see the numbers change as ships come and go, just to see what's happening and better understand all the economy related stuff going on.

I agree, although you can actually unpause the game after opening a screen (the middle button just under the messages window) but you cannot see the activity in real time.

This applies to construction as well. As I mentioned in another thread, if you open construction window whilst you are building something, unpause the game using the button mentioned above and watch the progress of a unit being built, the percentage does not increase in real time. You have to close the window and reopen it to see the percentage go up.
