Gentlemen,

You all keep participating in the alternations of many a PBEM game presented as AAR in these forums, e.g. my “On occasional occasions” thread describing some aspects of my ongoing game against Rattovolante.

Unfortunately, my opponent of that game has slowed down his turn turnover lately; seemingly mainly because of lots of work at work. As those of you who followed my ramblings previously will know, I am always short of time myself, but right now, I did feel there was a space left.

At that point of time, an alternate entered the scene:

I received a PM of a former foe of mine, Ketza, asking for the possibility of a new game. We played a game in WitP which was a lot of fun until he changed jobs and could not continue. So I told him about the situation and warned him that this would most likely be a slow 3 turn per week or so game, and he answered by sending a turn 1 in scenario 2, along with the house rule that only existing TFs may be moved and air unit’s orders may not be changed. So I picked up the gauntlet thrown into my face and am going to walk through the spanking I am about to receive like a man.

I decided to add to my woes relating to lack of time by starting another PBEM. The main reason for that is that I think that Ketza is likely to put a few of my pet hypotheses as to how this could/should be played as Japan to a test and the few turns done so far seem to confirm this assumption. As an example, I believe that deep thrusts into the Allied territory can and should be done as Japan due to virtually non-existing danger to SLOCs– in fact, an invasion of Kendari occurred in term 1 of this game. So let’s walk together through the alternations of this war, and whenever I come across something that is IMHO worth mentioning, I will share this with you (and maybe start some interesting discussion)

By now, we have already played a few turns - I'll try to get you up to present over the next few days.

Thanks for your interest

Hartwig

Gentlemen,

those of you who read one or more of my previous AARs will be aware that I don't like posting complete combat reports. I will try to stick to this rule in general, but will include a lot it this time, partly because Ketza is a staunch supporter of the Manila attack, which I think has been rarely discissed in other AARs.

When I ran the turn - as mentioned previously, we had agreed on a real "surprise attack", limited only by the rule that only one port was allowed to be KB's target, thus I only changed orders to existing TFs - I had the feeling of being in a real HQ post - I think his operations formed a rather complete picture. I will try to explain what I mean in a more detailed way in a later post.

So here are the parts of the combat report of day 1 I want to show:

Some general thoughts re. Manila attack... - 3/30/2010 5:56:32 AM

Gentlemen,

Finally, I find some time to provide some of the promised comments (waiting for turns to come in):

Let’s start with looking at the Manila attack variant in general. Without having looked at the Japanese OOB (which I did not), I believe it does the following things:

a) it takes the sub fleet based at Manila out of the game. It also leads to the loss of a number of transports, of course, but as options for moving assets out of the PI are limited anyway, I personally don’t think this is too relevant. The support ships one may lose hurt a bit more, but they are compensated for by the ones that remain untouched at pearl. The asset I miss most sorely are the subs, which even when assuming mostly dud torpedo attack takes out a number of “eyes” I like to have.

b) it may allow for a different distribution of the air strikes, including a more thorough suppression of Manila and Clark, possibly also freeing a Daitai or two for “other work”. The damage to port and airfields I received at Manila is significantly higher, the damage to Clark a bit higher than without that variant, thus fort building activities are delayed at both places. I believe that you should try to reach level 4 forts, which is difficult in the time that is usually available before the onslaught begins anyway.

c) one of the underestimated advantages I think it provides the Japan player with is also that it puts KB much more in the center of the map than the Pearl variant. Consequently, while not being used and out of sight it adds to the risk of Allied operations in more of the relevant (and potentially in the more relevant) parts of the map, while it can move in relatively quickly if it is needed to break any resistance. He can trade that advantage against a massive, continuous intervention of KB at a given point of interest, but I actually don’t think that is a good deal unless a definite advantage can be gained. I am not sure that this is the case for most of the applications I see.

Conversely, evidently the absence of the Pearl attack provides the Allied player with some more assets to play with than ususal. I am truly glad that in this game, there are almost 30 Catilinas and about 50 P40 at my disposal that have been destroyed in my other PBEM in the Pearl attack. Looking at the numbers of reinforcements for these planes, that is a thing to appreciate in AE. And of course the number of naval assets is significantly increased, specifically in terms of BB.

A problem is of course how to use these naval assets at the beginning of the game. I think options are more limited than it may seem, mainly because of the supply infrastructure required to run a BB fleet. The fuel situation in many parts of the map at the beginning of the game is one limiting factor, a second one is the port size/amount of naval support needed to rearm them. It makes no sense to move them somewhere where fuel and/or rearming capabilities are insufficient to sustain their operation. Bombardment runs won’t affect too much, plus there is the risk of Netty intervention, specifically as long as air cover that may be provided is not efficient. And support of invasions – well, it is a good application of the BBs, but setting up a meaningful invasion in the central pacific that are worth their potential cost in terms of assests at the beginning of the game is not easy (don't point me to Nemo's AAR, his invasion is meaningful as part of his overall strategy, which I will not be able to copy for reasons I cannot discuss here). The fact that KB has disappeared does not add to the possibilities to use the BB row.

If I should find the perfect solution, I’ll let you know . Or perhaps someone else has one to share/discuss ?

Thanks for your interest

My newest foe decide to hit Manila with the usual assortment and KB. Lost around 75 ships so far. My big hitters..POW, Repulse, Boise, and the Dutch navy need to be carefull.

First counterstrikes... - 3/30/2010 7:51:44 AM

Gentlemen,

Here’s a short summary of my first counterstrikes… almost exclusively naval strikes, and a bit different from my approach in my game against Rattovolante in that I use my available naval assets a tad more aggressively, even though I think the heavy hitters of force Z should – especially in view of KB lurking in the area and the limited number of places where they may be rearmed which leads to a certain degree of predictability with respect to their location after they have been used – be mainly used as a fleet in being now.

There are two reasons for this variation:

a) I know from our previous game that Ketza is a real fast invader. In other words, I do not think there will be an opportunity to use my assets in the DEI for a long time, so if I want to throw some dirt into the wheels of his plans – it won’t be a spanner right now for sure- this is the time to do it.

b) As I had posted in my AAR relating to my game against Rattovolante that I was going to strive to preserve my forces, which he may have studied, I thought maybe I should do something different now, just in case he assumes something else.

Here’s the outcome of my efforts on December 8:

Evidently no really decisive achievement, but a bit of a nuisance for sure. No reason for discontent IMHO. And, of course, a real fun turn to watch if you like watching naval combat, which I do ...

Scott 1964,

My newest foe decide to hit Manila with the usual assortment and KB. Lost around 75 ships so far. My big hitters..POW, Repulse, Boise, and the Dutch navy need to be carefull.

thanks for your comment. Yes, ship losses are high - I will come to that at a later point of time (which as usual may be only in a few days) in a separate post. At the same time, I think that as long as the ships lost are transports, the Allied can take them, especially in this region. The Japanese will get more fuel than usual when conquering though, don't know how much of a boost for their acivities that will be.

Gentlemen,

Time for another alternation… whereas the last post listed a number of surface battles during the first turn for which I was able to issue orders that I actually consider to have been sort of successful, this is the bad news: Concentrated air strikes that systematically went after shipping (as you will see in later posts, this has been a major aim of my opponent) and destruction of airfields – quite adroitly done, in my opinion. Fortunately, most of the sweeps did not meet any resistance anyway - where they did, it was - well, swept away

I add a long excerpt from the combat report again to illustrate:

Fortunately, there is no need to oppose if one does not believe one can achieve something. So I decided to keep my air force busy with training runs for a while, until an opportunity would appear...

P.S: Singkawang, Sambas, Kuching, Puerto Princesa and Kendari were conquered by Japan that turn.

Bases of interest taken: Aparri, Vigan

Perhaps I should add that whereas I do cut a number of events from the combat reports, in this and the above posts I did not leave out any significant Allied air strike. I do not belive in striking for striking's sake, but wait for opportunities. Why, e.g., should I waste my P40 in the PI when I am well aware of incoming zero sweeps of significant size ? I'd rather let him bomb... In addition, a lot of my airstrips were quite closed anyway...

Gentlemen,

execution of the December 11, 1941 turn revealed what I consider to have been my first real mistake:

Ketza was doing mostly his usual shiphunting, plus some "surprise attacks" on groung units in Malaya, probably hoping to catch a LCU in an inadequate mode. I tried to stand up against that at Palembang using three Buffalo squadrons (some 45 planes) set to form a layered CAP (70%/30%rest). I'll mark the corresponding parts of the combat report in colour below. Didn't work well, there were just too few planes in the air for whatever reason - but a lot of those who did appeared to have been damaged and the participating squadrons were so tired when I looked at them in the next game file that it did not make much sense to use them the next turn.

Gentlemen,

the previous post described what I consider to have been my biggest mistake so far, this one relates to my biggest success.

Last turn, I described an attempt to use my air assets that failed, and if you followed the combat report closely, you will have noticed a lot of unescorted naval attacks in the vicinity of the Philippines and Celebes.

Therefore, in the December 12, 1941 turn I tried another, stronger ambush on an escorted strike – in view of the availability of AVG, Rangoon was a good place to try that – and to use the P40 that start in the PI to cut into naval strikes. Both worked well.

According to the tracker , a total of 63 Japanese planes were shot down on that day for the cost of 14 Allied AC, including almost 30 Betties and 13 Oscars. I have no idea how deep Japan’s Betty pools are at the beginning of the game and how many Betties are produced per month in scenario 2, but I guess the Emperor was not pleased

Gentlemen,

the December 13 1941 turn was quite a lull, I will skip it (otherwise this AAR will never catch up with the game).

December 14 was supposed to see one major operation from my side, which did not quite work as designed. I guess partly the weatherman is to blame... The forecast said clear skies were to be expected, look at the real weather conditions described in the combat report excerpts below

Anyway, first let me introduce the plan. One of the things that Ketza did in Malaya was driving out my assets. During the first few turns, he wrecked quite successfuly a number of airfields, so I moved my planes. Then, he turned against my ships, which I did not start to move in time (partly because I expected major assets hunting for fleeing ships anyway).

An interesting thing relating to the Malaya campaign as it presents itself right now is that Ketza shipped a lot of stuff into Singora - and that's it so far. I *think* this may be part of an attempt to make me go for a forward defense and then cut me off, but maybe he also earmarked these troops for an early dash into Sumatra and/or Java (he took Palembang very early in our WitP game with an elegant coup de main). In any case, this means that he relies almost exclusively on Singora as a base for his shorter legged planes (Lilly,Sally). There are also a decent number of ships in port. (I had reconned Singora on a regular basis, detection level was 8/10 on December 14.)

Therefore, I moved a lot of strike (both Hudson squadrons, the Blenheim IV squadron and one Blenheim I squadron) assets back into Georgetown and Taiping and tossed in a some 20 B17D from Singapore, escorts and a sweep component. This did not turn into a disaster, but frankly I thought the resulting damage was disappointing.

I guess I'll have to order some more ground bombing training (even though the RAF and RAAF pilots were about 50ish in terms of ground bombing skill; the failure of the B17 did not really come as a surprise due to their lack of said skill).

Not much else to report other than ship hunting by Ketza, today with naval attack flavor rather than port strikes. Oh, and Victoria point fell.

Gentlemen,

I'll very briefly sum up the December 15 - December 17 1941 turns to bring you up to the current state of affairs. I still have to do my orders for the December 18 turn, so I'll be brief. There's not too much to tell about these turns, anyway.

Mainly, during these turns an invasion of Manado took place. The place fell on December 17. In other relevant news, unfortunately my opponent caught transiting parts of AVG in a 40 Zero sweep. Nominally, my combat altitude was higher than his, but that did not help. Losses were 2:1 in his favor, fortunately most of the pilots are still alive and kicking, so there'll be another day for them once I find the airframes.

That's about it. Thanks for reading

Gentlemen,

in contrast to my other AAR, updates of this AAR relating to my game against Ketza could contain a lot of information, there are currently a number of parallel major operations of some interest and I presently owe Ketza the orders for the December 23rd turn, whereas my last update was after execution of the December 17 turn. So in a way, this post is a teaser to keep you interested, I will try to sum up some of the events in the future...

Some of the Japanese carriers are currently present in the vicinity of Wake - Ketza and I have been dancing around Wake in the last few turns and I think I managed to delay him there for a few turns. I will present this battle in a chronological way once it is over (which is probably the case either after resolution of this turn or the next turn).

A second part of the carriers is covering the next deep thrust (Singapore still belongs to me): There is a cluster of enemy TFs 6 hexes from the coast of Java. Christmas leave has been cancelled for everyone who can carry a weapon. There's going to be action in Java soon. I will keep you posted...

A third focus is currently China. As I am not sure how much Ketza's plans against his new opponent vary from the ones pursued in this game, I will not say much about this at this point of time and just indicate that he has found an attack vector which will force me to retreat from a number of bases in order to avoid being encircled and slaughtered. In general, I have a problem with supply FLOW (not yet total supply) in China - I just don't seem to be able to supply my troops in some bases, even if the neighboring base has supplies aplenty and I try to pull supplies into the base in question. Frankly, I still did not fully master the control of the supply flow as modified by the last patch. To me, there seems to be a current towards the "main base of the theatre" now which needs to be constantly countered by pulling supply in contrast to the previous situation where supply pulling only had to be activated occasionally. Unfortunately, this pulls supply also from places where you don't want it to be removed. If someone can tell me his view on / approach to things and/or the changes, I'll be glad to receive additional information.

Ok, that's my update of the day. Thanks for your interest

vlcz,

when I give the full report on the Wake campaign, you will see that my courage is actually very limited, but has allowed me to keep part of my opponent's CVs at that place of relatively small relevance for a few days. Note that my above post does not contain any comment on the Allied assets participating in the dance...

Gentlemen,

Ok, let’s talk about W(F)ake.

I’d like to start from the original motivation. As you know, my opponent had opted for the Manila variant, which is unpleasant because KB is very much in the center of the map and can be quickly redeployed to wherever additional punch is needed.

So my original question was “How can I draw KB or at least parts thereof to a place of relative irrelevance, causing my opponent to burn precious fuel, rack up some sys damage and reveal the position of some of his assets ?”.

One good possibility for the bait required would be a carrier. So where on the map might one reveal the presence of a carrier at a place of relative irrelevance? For me, the answer is/was Wake, because it is a place to which in many games Allied carriers are moved in order to try to beat up the Wake invasion. So, if you would get intel about a US CV at Wake, that would sound plausible – maybe even like an opportunity to spring a trap and get rid of those CVs early on.

Next question is how to make your presence known. Well, there are planes that are typical for a carrier, and if you let them do search and/or ASW work with high intensity, earlier or later they will be identified as what they are. Which does, of course, lead at once to the question whether there is any need to send a carrier there at all (after all, it is a place of relative irrelevance, so why risk a precious asset there ?). Just a few planes will do nicely. Of course, you may want to have fighters and strike planes, so you have a chance to demonstrate that your fake is real. And in fact, that is a role for which the F2A3 is very well suited – because it can transfer from Wake to Midway, just like the SDB, so your valuable carrier squadrons won’t be lost in the action.

So that’s what I did – I based 2 squadrons of planes at Wake and started making noise, waiting to see what would come my way.

To be continued…

Thanks for your interest so far

Gentlemen,

in the next few posts, I will show the choreography of our dance. Most of the Allied dancers dance under the sea (because they are subs, only one Allied AK was sunk during the campaign)... Mostly just a sequence of maps, you can see the game date on them, plus the relevant parts of the combat report.

First move on December 16: Guests start to arrive...

... so I decided it is time to shoot my bolt.

Here's what resolution of the December 18 turn resulted in:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 131,98

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid spotted at 16 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 2

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 8
SBD-3 Dauntless x 9

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
F2A-3 Buffalo: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships

AMC Kinryu Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
194 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 16 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 136,98

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 37 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 7
D3A1 Val x 9

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
F2A-3 Buffalo: 2 destroyed

Allied Ships
xAK Florence D., Bomb hits 9, and is sunk

------------------------------------------------------------------

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 131,98

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 12 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 2

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 5
SBD-3 Dauntless x 8

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
F2A-3 Buffalo: 1 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Kako
CA Kinugasa

A pity these ships were not hit... the Dauntless were flying 1000 lb bombs around

Looking back, I should have set the Dauntless to a lower search/rest percentage, but frankly I did not expect that little CAP and wanted to save high quality pilots. I actually had not thought I would even achieve something with the strike other than reinofrcing the message "there's something out there" and maybe a scare...

and the beginning of Ketza's retaliation... poor Wake garrison... The squadrons had been moved back to Midway, damaged airframes destroyed. After all, I did expect some bombardment and/or attacks on the base and did not want to spoil the surprise by a message relating to a Dauntless destroyed on the ground...

So, in the end I think my little fake may have achieved what it was supposed to achieve - pull out a CV force, cause some delay and extra ship movements. The numerous subs which I vectored in pulled off a few attacks, even though they did not hunt anything down (which was unlikely anyway bearing in mind the dud torpedoes). Everything on top of that was bonus.

What I should have done better was keep an eye on supply levels at Wake - actually, I sent an xAK there too late. I assume that the landings were easier than it may have been the case if the CD unit would have been fully supplied (even though the numerous bombardments definitely took their toll as well). Well, maybe next time. That would be Midway, would it not

Thanks for your interest

Not necessarily, it could be Johnston Island and thence onto the Line Islands. Depends on whether he wants to capture/neutralise Hawaii or attempt to sever the SLOC between USA and Australia.
