Please see this - as with most of our titles, this is exclusive to the Matrix Games online store.

Why not purchase it from our online store? We don't bite.

Its just as easy as steam or impulse, and saving a backup copy is a big plus, would recommend purchasing the game if that is the only thing holding you back.

i dont purchase from anywhere that i cant re-download the software again at any time in the future (barring the storefront in question going away, of course)... and i wont pay extra for "download protection"... this pretty well excludes digital river from consideration. its also why i waited for armada 2526 to show up on impulse. (although, as an aside, i never did get around to purchasing armada 2526, because by the time it showed up, i had bought a few other games that were demanding my time... which is one of the risks of not reselling through one of the large established storefronts in a timely fashion)

if i can dl distant worlds again in, say, 3 years from now and just put in my reg code, then id consider purchasing it, but i assume since its sold through digital river, that isnt the case...? i dont want to have to keep up with a backup copy of the installer files.

First of all, are you aware that as long as we are around, you will always be able to re-download? The "Download Insurance" is really only for DR. If you ever need to re-download, just go to www.findmyorder.com and do so, it works for everyone. If you have any issues, just contact us.

Second, you should not need to redownload as with our games, you can take the downloaded installer, burn it to a CD and put that on your shelf. It's not tied to a download client or anything else, once you bought it, you own it, just like you got it from the shelf in a store.

Yes, you can do that (re-download it in three years). The "download insurance" we are required to add by DR, but it is not necessary as long as we are around. We have customers still re-downloading games they bought 7 years ago when we were the first to offer PC games via digital download.

Regards,

- Erik

You can order a physical copy to ship to your residence, and take extended download service off the thing by clicking the little trash can next to extended download service.

ok that changes things then... like i said, ive got no interest in keeping up with a backup of the installer (digitally, or burned to cd, or otherwise)... i just want to be able to re-download later if i decide i want to play the game again in the future, with no hassle or extra expense... its the convenience of digital purchasing that has led me to buy online exclusively for the last 3 years...

i also prefer steam because i like keeping everything in one place, but that isnt a dealbreaker for me...

whats the license/DRM like on the game? if i want to install it on my home pc and work pc, can i do that? i dont have to be online all the time to play or anything silly like that do i?

i have no interest in or use for a physical copy of anything anymore. i havent bought a game on physical media in years and years... the sole exception being dawn of war 2, which i was able to get for $10 cheaper in the store. i opened the box, removed the slip of paper with the serial code on it, and threw the box, game, and manual in the trash before i left the parking lot.

No DRM, other than a basic serial number check. You get your serial number when you purchase and you can always retrieve it at www.findmyorder.com as well (or on our site too if you register your game in our Members Club). You are legally allowed to install it on two systems, as long as you are only playing it on one at a time. No online activation or "phone home", just a serial number check when you install.

No DRM as far as I can tell, only your bog standard serial key check when installing.

I've got installed on my laptop and desktop PC, and am transferring one save game between the two. :)

EDIT: Feck, got ninja'd by Erik!

Maybe you guys don't bite, but you also don't accpet pre paid credit cards it seems. I just bought a game from StarDock to see if it works, and yes I can buy games from Stardock, but it seems I can't buy from Digital River.

A customer support person called me, and said I need to get another method of payment. Well buying a prepaid credit card was my only method of payment.

So unless, Digital River supports pre paid credit cards, I can't buy their games.

I'm sorry to hear that Davor. I didn't know for sure if those would work, but given all the payment types we do support I assumed it was worth a try. What about a bank transfer or a check, are those possible for you?

so i bought the game this weekend, and im happy with my purchase... im especially happy to see the 1.0.2 patch, because i couldnt figure out why my economies were always tanking for no good reason in my sandbox games...

now im trying to get a few of my other 4x-fan friends interested, however they all want to know if theres a demo. will there be one available?

Mmm, you should rethink your position : in fact, Steam/impulse/whatever will only allow you to redownload as long as they are in business *and* that their proprietary software and DRM works on your system *and* that you don't have a broken web connection..
OTOH putting all the non-DRMed Matrix games files to an external HD, USB key, whatever, is much more of a guarantee for the future !!

whats important to you is not the same as whats important to me. i care about convenience. it is my primary overriding concern. i dont want a box, a manual, a card with my serial printed on it, a usb key, an external drive, a burned disk, or any other physical thing period connected with my purchase.

i can absolutely guarantee you that the odds of me misplacing/damaging any physical backup of a game after a period of 2+ years is FAR greater than the odds of steam up and disappearing in such a way that i lose all access to my games over the same period of time. and even IF steam should tank at some point in the nebulous future, chances are good every single game ive purchased on there will be dirt cheap from some other source by that time, making it not too burdensome to rebuy the few games that i will want to replay again.

now youre just being pedantic.
