Retrofit Question - 3/26/2010 11:26:04 PM

Hi all,

In my current game, I decided I wanted to design ships for my own custom fleet alongside the game's automation (I did not automate fleet creation - only ship design). All was well until I decided I wanted to retrofit the destroyers/capital ship in my fleet. I cannot select my own designs in the retrofit menu - it only allows me to select designs that the AI has built. Is there any way around this?

Thanks!

The automation upgrades all the ships on the fly and obsoletes old models it seems.

This works fine for me if you have control over ship design. If one of you can upload a save I will take a look. I play with my own designs quite often and can retrofit to them without an issue.

But does it work if you share ship design with the AI? I was hoping it did...

I thought it did, but I am now wondering. The AI should not be "stepping on" your designs. I will see if I can duplicate this.

Be sure that the design you are trying to retrofit to is not obsolete - if so it will not show in the retrofit menu when you right-click on your ship.

When the AI handles ships design for you, it will automatically obsolete old designs of the same type when it creates new ones. So your designs may have suffered this fate

They'll still be there though. Just turn off "Only show latest designs" at the top of the Designs screen and you should find your old design. Edit your design and make it not obsolete, save it, and then it should show in the retrofit menu.

Unfortunately, at the moment when you allow the AI to control ship design, it will re-obsolete your design when it makes a new design of the same type.

Probably need to modify how this works...

It would be nice to be able to make the A.I auto upgrade non military ships and bases as I find it a chore.I would like the option to just upgrade space bases and military ships.

An upgrade all botton would also help, rather than having to pick each ship/base one at a time to upgrade.

Elliot - I'm pretty sure retrofitting just doesn't work the way it's supposed to. It looks like if you "upgrade" a design, this effectively disallows you from ever creating a retrofit for the ship role permanently.

New game: I turned off ALL automation and handled everything myself. I upgraded all of my ships one time because I wanted to focus just on expansion at the beginning of the game. After a while, I decided to dabble in creating some new designs - so far so good. I produced them and used them. After finding some flaws with my designs, I decided to make a modification and just add "Beta" to the name. What I was hoping for was a retrofit option to upgrade to, in this instance, "Mothership Beta." Nope, I can only retrofit to "Chicago." I marked the "Chicago" design as obsolete. I even DELETED the friggin thing. Nope, still asking me to retrofit to Chicago.

I can build the new model just fine, but retrofitting just doesn't work. I don't know if it helps or not, but for some unknown reason I cannot edit current designs - only copy them to new, make the change, and save it. I just don't know what to do at this point - I guess retrofitting is broken if you upgrade even one time. My only option is just to produce new ships and scrap the old ones.

Please continue to improve this game - I really love the idea and I think it can be so amazing once all of this gets ironed out. I don't yet regret the purchase; it just REALLY needs a patch ASAP.

Marcuso,

Thanks for the detailed report - with design on manual it works for me, but I have not lately used the "Upgrade" button as that is a computer-designed upgrade (it used to work though). Based on your and Sarissofoi's reports, we will investigate this ASAP. I can say that playing with the release build and using manual ship design and using the Copy as New and obsoleting designs as I don't need them, I haven't had any problems.

Regards,

- Erik
