I've just started my fourth game with quite a small galaxy and no pesky pirates and I've got automation on ask me first. I'm taking things really slow so I can really learn how this game works because I have realised it's not like any other 4X I've ever played.

Everything was going well and to help me explore I built four more explorer ships and I have just checked up on them and three out of the four are going to explore the same star. I will make a save an can upload if required.

Maybe this is correct but I'm just wondering.

This has happened to me as well. It's one of the reasons I prefer assigning explorers to sectors in my initial expansion phase. But then you need to micro their refueling needs.

Possible get around: assign them to stars in different sectors, and once they are there, automate them. That's a bit tedious but manageable in the early part of the game when this is most important. Later on, who cares, just automate the lot.

Signed.

This has happened in all my games. I usually have a lot of exploration ships initially though.

Think I know why they do this some star systems contain alot of planets and moons and they all seem to be surveyed for resources individually. Suppose it would take one ship longer to fully explore the system.

This is not actually a problem, at least in my experience. If you let them go there they will explore the system together and spread out from there. They will end up not going to the same system, but often at the very beginning of the game they start out heading to the same one.

If you want, you can start them off manually by heading them to different stars, then automate them but I find it works out about the same after a little while.

I just assign them to a certain sector.

Which is really easy, select a explorer then right click a sector's star, and the option to Explore ?1 System.
