I set my colonization to suggest. The computer kept suggesting that I colonize a planet that was in another empires system. I said no because I now it was going to cause extreme friction. I kept asking every couple of years and I kept saying no.

If you turn off the option to colonize/build in enemy systems in your options screen, this should not happen.

Also: It's worth pointing out: in DW, a player doesn't 'own' a whole star system, only planet by planet. So, humans may own Earth, but the Naaxillians can come in and colonize Mars. DW is very different from other 4x games in this respect, AFAIK.

You can own a whole system,

this is how

Just send you strongest fleet there and show them the door. Now the system is yours.

Guess the problem is can you stay there and keep it.

I agree I really like that two or even three empires could be in a system.'
I was unprepared for war, they were a bit bigger than me, so I didn't want to push it over a simple system. I didn't see the option to "not settle in other empires" thing, but will use it. Thanks.

Of course if I feel I own the Sol system, and the Naaxillians decide to colonize Mars, I might just have to send troops to secure my planet, or get out a giant broom and sweep the surface of Mars clean again. I may not own the system, but I'm not going to look favorably on that happening (as I assume most non-allied governments would, even for the AI players).
