Hello threre,

is there a way to upgrade existing mining bases ad private owned ships to a newer design?
Does the private AI upgrade over time? Or do the old ships / bases from the beginning of the game stay in service forever?
It would be nice to get those improved ressource extractors into service.

I have this question too. Will they ever upgrade or will the ship go until destroyed?

I obsoleted my freighter designs and none of the new ones have been purchased. Freighters are still being built but they seem to be the obsolete designs. Under the design list, all the news ones still show 0, but the freighter totals keep rising.

Is this with 1.0.2 or with 1.0.0/1.0.1?

I do not know, but I have heard that if you make a new design the private sector will upgrade their ships.

Ok, please try again with 1.0.2 if you can.

I tried with 1.0.2 and no go. Had about 10 or so new freighters built and they were all obsolete designs.

The private sector does upgrade its ships using your designs. It is just a matter of time. I still have the 1.01 patch by the way.

My questions are: a) does the private sector retrofit and upgrade the mining and extraction stations once you saved a new design? and b) does the private sector AI have any parameters in choosing which design to use?

No one can update any kind of offworld base, period, so no, the private sector will never update their mining bases. They pretty much hang around until they are slagged. With all the crazy creatures, marauding aliens, and pirates, those old bases don't last too long. Then you make the final version of the base armed to the teeth.

I don't know if SHIPS are ever updated. I don't SEE them doing it, but then, attrition seems to eventually claim these older ships. They invariably pick a fight with some random pirate or space monster, and bite it. If you're prepared to be hated by the entire galaxy, because, apparently, the AI will bitch at you about removing your military from their systems even if the "military" is simply an armed freighter, but on the other hand, having hundreds of heavily armed freighters flying around the system makes for a great civil defense militia, as anyone coming into your system faces a gigantic horde of freighters firing at them while they run away...especially when you're arming freighters with battleship grade weaponry instead of building a fleet you have to pay maintenance on, resulting in enemy cruisers that get mowed down like grass. Go freighter militia!

My mining bases are left alone by pirates since they're loaded for bear and some are built near my home systems.

So our only options available to us at this point is for upgrading mining bases to a) let someone blow it up or b) don't build mining bases unless absolutely necessary.

I still wish the devs could somehow program the private sector AI to upgrade and retrofit their stations.  Other 4x games give the role to the construction ships.

In the interim, can we shoot our own private sector mining bases? I hate resorting to the editor to erase obsolete stations.

Can we destroy off world bases that cannot be upgraded, and then rebuild?

@ Erik: Loaded up a savegame as well. After game start I turned automated ship design off and designed new freighters and mining sips using "copy as new". The AI still builds the old ones in the starport. It doesn't matter if I mark the old ones as obsolete or not; the AI keeps ignoring the newer designs. I'm using the 1.02 Version. The starport definitely startet building the old designs AFTER the newer ones had been designed.

Edit: Now I have deleted the old designs, so the newer ones are the only existing ones. But the AI still started building the old ( non existing) ones.

@ freeboy: I dont't think so. Since mining bases are privat owned you can't retire them.

@freeboy: you can delete the stations via the editor.
Maybe even place then an upgraded version.

@Anglachel, do you mark the old designs obsolete before deleting them?
I ask, because the game doesn't do it automatically when using "copy as new"
