A huge file of realistic / space-sounding names i've used in many 4x games :)
Its just a text file, but because of the ammount of names i decided to upload it to filefront rather than copy and paste a walloftext here

Place it in "Distant Worlds\Customization\Yournameofchoice" and activate that "theme" ingame, DONT overwrite the original file in the root folder.
http://www.filefront.com/15935653/systems.txt

Examples: "Delta Cassiopeia", "Zeta Reticulii", "Rigel", "Tau Ceti", "Procyon", "Epsilon Serpentis" and some hundred others

They only have so many ports... maybe 20 or so, and they handle a lot of other downloads... so if you get that message it just means that all the ports are being used... so just try again later.

If the file is not huge, it should also be possible to zip it and upload it right here to the forum just FYI.

Hi there,
I put the txt file into the Distant Worlds\Customization\ folder but there is no other theme showing up in the menu, only the default button is available. Something I did wrong?

You need to put it in a folder in the customization folder. I put mine in ../customization/Real Star Names

Not even 900 names...

If you pick a larger galaxy, what would happen? It uses some of the names from the default list? If so I think it might defeat the purpose.

Great list though. I think I'll use it for smaller maps

Systems without colonizable planets dont get a fancy name anyway, so you wont need 1000 unique names for a 1000 star galaxy :P

There's another download link in post #9, jrhindo. Terl has uploaded it to the matrix server.

Filefront hosts so much stuff, I guess every now and then something goes missing.

Don't let the number bother you. You're free to add as many names as you wish (using Notepad or another editor - it's a simple text file).

There are 24 Greek letters and 88 stellar constellations, 2112 combinations in total. Plus proper names like "Sirius" (for "Alpha Canis Majoris" - by the way, that star is also called "Aschere" or "Canigula" by other peoples).

If that's not enough, you can use the Hipparcos catalogue, which contains the positions of more than 118,000 stars (sequentially numbered, no fancy names, I admit, but they do represent real stars!). :-)

If you will tell me where this file is, I will be happy to take it and put it into useable form. After all, I have vested interest in this as well.

I have plenty of ship names, but cool ship names are so personal in taste.
And on the smaller ships, I do not waste cool names on Escorts which you end up with a billion of: I usually do something like PT-100 or F-700. But destroyer and above... I have a pile of cool names for.

I am surprised the DW ships do as well as they do... the Adjective Noun Combination -- sort of like what Harpoon did for mission names.

Same with system names: I am big fan of Greek City names... but that is a personal thing. It would be kind of cool if DW could do the same two word combination like for the other ships: a list of 1st names and a list of second names...

This is my first mod attempt for the game and I am still not able to get the star names to appear in the game. I have the file in Distant Worlds/Customization/Real Star Names/myfilename.txt. I can see the theme in the game menu and when I switch to it the system pauses as if it's loading all the names, but when I do a quick start all the stars have the same old bogus names. What else should I be doing?

HH, the .txt file must always be called, 'systems.txt'. You have it in the right place though.
