Anyone any idea why some of the above ships often have supplies loaded in them and are disbanded in port? Do they need the supplies physically aboard to function? Or does it not matter?

Yes they need supplies for the most part. I think too that they will draw on supplies present at the port-somebody else should know the finer details, but I just fill them up with supplies and keep it that way jst to keep it simple.

Load them up and set them to "do not unload". Yes you disband them in port.�
