Such that if you let everything run fully automated you'd essentially be just another AI race.

Along this line of thought, what are the prospects of opening up some tables by which we can tweek overall automation preferences? Especially for ship design, but also for colony priority (since distance from your 'core' doesn't seem to be a consideration to the automation).

Indeed, I've found much better results manually controlling where my ships build their mining bases especially, as the automation seems to pick the 'best' spot regardless of distance. Sure it mines faster but I cannot defend it as easily and ships take forever to reach it...
