One thing that really bugs me about Pacific War is that replacement equipment for your units arrives almost instantly from the factories that produce it. You build an artillery piece in Los Angeles in 1941, and next week it is in the Philippines in a besiged garrison.

Same thing happens with aircraft replacements. As long as there was supply, you could get new weapons, even if the base was cut off.

Not having, and thereby not knowing the full way that Uncommon Valor works, here are my suggestions.

I think that there sould be two forms of routine convoys. One that moves supply, and one that moves replacement equipment. Supply should not be made into equipment, as in Pacific War. Equipment should have to be brought in on its own. However, we don't want to burden the player with all of this bits of minor-details, but adding this as a form of routine convoys could add historical shortages felt during certain parts of the war.

One form of supply gives units food and ammunition to prepare a unit for battle, while another form of supply gives replacement men and equipment to refit units after and before battle.

This will fix two points of personal anguish in regards to Pacific War. One being that equipment miraculously appears around the world, and another that units receiving replacement troops and equipment eats up supply points so that they will not have enough Preparation Points or Readiness for battle.

Suppose the player merely assigned merchant pipelines from a start point to and end point. They then allocated ships (Cargo and tankers) to that pipeline. This generates a through put capacity (being a factor of number of ships and distance) which the player then assigns supplies, replacements etc. Another limit is the port handling capacity at both ends. Escorts could also be assigned to this pipeline. This could handle the routine convoys.
It would give the player control yet once set up the pipeline would move cargo until changed. Just the beginning of an Idea!

Jeremy, didn't you notice that it was the 5,000 planes that have been in the pools for the past six months that are providing the replacements? :D

Seriously, the whole logistics susbystem of PacWar needs serious re-working for WITP. I mentioned in another thread that you can unload some 100+ MCS at a level 1 port in 1 week, fat chance, ships were backed up constantly at the major sites, even ones where there were facilities.

Losictics was glossed over to a great extent in the original PacWar, let's hope that it is better treated in WITP. The problem is that it was an adaptation of a land system (the WiR series) and while that one was not so bad for a land campaign, it didn't translate well to a global naval game.

"Logistics is the Rodney Dangerfield of the Military - aint got no respect". :p
