If you copy as new it will make the old design dissapear from the design list and also leave that design available to be built at shipyards.

I also have a problem with 'copy as new', but in my games the AI ignores my new designs and produce its own design - in 1 out of 10 times it seems to work, but then the problem is back again. I just wounder why no other has this problem. I must do something wrong!?

Thats because its not really gone. This is a database thing where its not deleting the ship from child tables just the parent (i.e. its making orphans). Thats why the original ship you "copied as new" from is gone (from the main ship design table) but it still appears in drop down menus in the construction menu and the right click -> menu.

In other words don't use copy as new right now its broken just add new/delete and obsolete.

I only use copy as new and have no problems with it.

Make sure you obsolete then also delete the old versions (you have to uncheck that "show only newest" or whatever box every time).

Crud, yep your right thats what it is the checkmark in the "show only newest" which defaults to checked even when you come out of the new ship editor or reopen the design window. Go into the ship designer uncheck "show only new" then hit copy as new, change and save the design and the checkmark autmatically is rechecked.

So this is not really a bug but that checkmark should not be on in a new game by default (ok thats opinion) and certainly shouldn't be automatically re-checked after you uncheck it and reopen the form.

Thats whats probably causing these issues with the ai building old ships is people don't see there design on the list and wonder why its being built.

It really shouldn't be "show only latest", but rather, "Hide Obsolete". Otherwise if you build two different types of one class, the "older" one will be hidden, even though it is not obsolete. Also, if the AI does not have design permissions and it wants to build something you don't have a design for, it should not be permitted to build it.

I think this is now becoming a very requested feature However, I'm sure Elliot has stated this will be the case in the next patch for anyone designing their own ships (AI will still use the current system though)
