Agreed. Started popularization campaign by calling my brother one on the phone. I feel good about this effort.

Hmmm....cultural debate ensues...

Technically speaking, folks, wouldn't the appropriate (or inappropriate, as the case may be) limey-ism here "prat"?

Obviously, a wanker is one who, well, wanks. Let's move on without further descriptors. IIRC, isn't a 'prat' more of a descriptor for an annoyingly immature person? Least that's what my Kiwi interpreter told me / called me once upon a time.

Anyways, wouldn't 'prat' be more appropo in this picture?

Wanker is better.

So, T, you're more of a wanker fan, then?

I'm a fan of the term.

As Mynok mentioned, almost nobody in the States knows what it means for sure, but they're all pretty sure it's an insult.

Count me in for the popularization campaign.

I don't know the exact definition either, if there is one, but it's definitly an insult. I recall on the TV show Married with Children (an insult in itself) that Peggy's maiden name was Wanker. Her family was always portrayed as low-life, in-breeding imbiciles.

I'm pretty sure I know what the exact definition is. Let's say that it's slang for one that 'enjoys the pleasures of his own company' or one that 'is on very close terms with Rosy Palmer' or...well, surely you get the gist now?

I don't think anyone does, but we do seem to have a plethora of low level insults in the UK that don't exist over the pond.

But now you're taking it literally, it's not always or indeed often, meant like that. I do remember "I'm a W@nker" being a big hit here in the UK. Surprisingly it never got much air time on the Beeb

Absolutely, we have have some Brit friends in North Carolina who constantly amuse us with such "charming" comments about people they don't like. But I never get it unless it's explained.

Right, but that gets one in the mindset of what a 'wanker' should be. Self-obsessed, playing with self, over-indulgent, immature, prattish. The Americanism would be a 'jerk-off', I believe. Similar literal background, different application.

ETA: Ah, yes-Ivor Bigun. Grew up listening to his stuff on Dr. Demento on Sunday nights.

What I've never 'gotten' is the recoil in horror with use of 'bloody' in Englishisms. I know that approximate equivalent here would be the F-bomb, but still. It's always struck me as an odd 'ultimate' epipthet.

The great thing about these English insults is that hardly any forums recognise them

Hmm, I wonder what the score is at the moment. Is AE a JFB game, because Jap subs "never miss", or an AFB game, because "modern Jap aircraft are not present in historically correct numbers and units don't upgrade to them right"?

from my current experiences....anyone who considers AE a JFB game hasn't played as Japan vs. a competant opponent or set of opponents.

Those darn subs....i should be able to Jonny Walker them at will in 1942!!!!

I still don't understand how we managed to make a game that pisses off fanboys on both sides. Don't think that's been done before...

I also had the best steak of my life in one of those said brew pubs (a brew pub with great food?). A 8oz fillet that only cost me $24! I could learn to like that! We will see.

Well, I think we may have found the venue for the August get together if you're still interested in hosting, Steve.

But of course!

Yeah, I got a couple of lectures on the improperness of the phrase. By a woman who then dropped the "f" bomb every other word.

It's a game that manages to offend every one. Makes me think of my political positions. Therefor I heartily approve of this game!
