Got this game yesterday -- second hand from the guy selling his on Half.com. This was after Chips & Bits and Matrix both came up empty...

Set it up, patched to 1.11, off I went.

Anyway, I was playing a few scenarios yesterday, mainly Coral Sea and #18 (I think -- the made up one with the various battles all over the map so you can see how everything works).

At one point, I had two battleship groups sitting off the Shortlands set to Surface Combat. I decided to send them to go bomb Lunga. I changed both their missions to Bombardment, set the destination to Lunga.

In the night turn, I could see the groups move halfway down The Slot. When the morning came back up, they had gone right back to where they were. They weren't reacting to enemy action (no message for that), the just kept turning around.

Finally, setting them to Surface Combat, moving them to Lunga, and THEN setting them to Bombard did the trick and got them unstuck.

Any idea what was going on here?

First real game was Coral Sea. My US carriers found their carriers and did some heavy damage to Shoho and Shokaku. In return, they blew the hell out of my carriers, so all the air groups relocated to Port Moresby (save the torpedo bombers, who never left the ground). My carriers limped back to base, and thankfully didn't sink during the game. :-)

Some submarines in the area managed to put some fish into Shokaku and Shoho, and they eventually went down. (Yay!)

Anyway, the two carrier groups and LBA at Port Moresby launched many many air strikes against the carrier group and the transport group coming to Port Moresby. Despite this, the transports reached Port Moresby and managed to sit around for two/three days while under contant air attack.

How many freaking 1000lb bombs can AKs take? I mean, seriously, these guys must have take 4-5 bomb hits apiece before slowly succumbing to Davy Jones. Seemed rather odd.

Couple notes/Questions: When windowed with -w, I can't see the map. Oh well, no window then. Wish the ICQ "Always On Top" would work, because then I wouldn't have to tab out of the game to answer messages. Not a biggie though.

When selecting a transfer destination for an air group, the map scrolls really fast. How can I make the map scroll really fast all the time?

How can I auto-skip the intro cinematic?

What's a good number of AOs to go into a replenishment task force for a CV group?

I'm still hazy on barges. Where do I get em/make em and what are they good for?

Looks like a great game!

Just rename (or even delete) the "video" folder in the Matrix Games\Uncommon Valor directory

Another trick to speed up loading UV is to change the target of the UV shortcut on your desktop to UncommonValor.exe from the default Start.exe.

When wondering just how many bombs a ship can absorb before sinking, keep in mind that pilots tended to claim a lot more hits than they actually completed. Unless you are playing without FOW, then the reported hits will be exaggerated.
