Okay here are a couple of SPWAW Boot questions for all you old Salts. I just finished my second scenario of a WWII campaign, I am naturally playing the Corps. After I completed both scenarios I fixed my units and then went on to adding more units and upgrades. Here's the first question. I had fortifications, a weapons company and a few other new units to choose from, I saved at the end of my scenario and when I went back to choose the units I wanted those units were no longer available to me. Second I had to Btry's of pack Howitzers and now they are gone, they were not OBA, what's the deal? I am playing ver 4.4 Semper Fi

Were these core units you picked at the beginning of the campaign or support units, Sarge? Support units do not move from battle to battle. Only your basic core units do that. WB ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

WB, I picked up the arty after the end of my first battle, so I guess that makes them support. I guess those gunrocks are back on a transport headed to Australia by now. Thanks. Any idea's on the first question? 1stSgt

First, let me ask you a couple of questions.... What did you take as your core units at the beginning of the campaign? These formations are the ones that "follow" into each scenario. When you say you added more units and upgrades, what exactly did you add? I don't believe you can increase the number of core units....only upgrade or change them. Were these purchases made during the "Fix-Change" part after the battle was over (the only time you can modify core units), or after? If after, then you were spending "support" points, which only applies to the upcoming mission. Any units purchased with these points will only appear during the next game, and will NOT be available to you afterwards. Core unit purchases shouldn't include things like OBA or forts, since they may likely never see combat(would you want to have to move a pillbox to follow the armor as they advance across the desert?). These should be bought with support points, depending on the mission.

I NOW understand about core units and support. I'll be honest I did not read the whole manual. Rules and Regs are my life, I like to give it a rest when I'm on liberty. I can read (not bad for a grunt) and I have used the search engine on this board. But do you have an answer as to why the Support assets available to me upon completion of a scenario, are not the same if I choose to save and pick later. S/f 1stsgt

When a scenario ends, as you say in your last note, you lose immediately all support units. You have to pick them again. Keep in mind, core units (the first units you buy when you begin your campaign) stay with you till the end. They can be upgraded or repaired at the end of each battle depending on the repair points the campaign gives you. Support units are only there on a battle by battle basis. Any support units purchased will disappear at the end of that battle, even if you have saved, when you start the next battle. Semper Fi! WB, I guess I'm not stating very cleary the crux of my question. I complete a scenario everybody gets promoted, all the support units go away. Then I get to pick and choose new support units. i.e fortifications or a weapons company, CAS. But if I do not pick them then, and I save none these units appear again when reload the save even if I go thru the end of the last battle and whole sequence of promotion etc. again. I can only choose from a basic list, of 12/41 when I started there are none of the more enhanced support units available to me. 1stSgt

The availability of CAS is determined randomly when the battle is generated. Certain types of units, like bunkers, are only available in Defend type scenarios. I don't know why a unit like a weapons co. wouldn't show up. Maybe you didn't have enough money to buy it? ------------------ Billy Yank I don't define "my own" the way you want me to.

I guess maybe I'm a little dense, Sarge, but I can't grasp what is happening to you. Send me your save and tell me what it is you are trying to do exactly. 1. The battle ends 2. The score appears 3. The repair screen appears 4. You repair or change your units. 5. The new support purchase screen comes up. 6. You buy new support units. 7. You save? 8. You open the saved file (#7 above) What I need to know is are you buying units with your support points, then saving the game after you buy them? And then when you load that save, they do not appear? Then I save (but there are alot of new support units available, that have not been previously. fortifications, Weapons Co, Air, but I did not purchase anything.) So when I loaded the save steps 1-5 occured, but none of those new support units were available again to me. I will send the files by AOL email. 1stSgt

If you load the saved game and you get the promotions then the fix/change screen, you're probably saving when the save screen comes up automatically after you quit the score screen. At this point, the next battle has not yet been generated. You can then pull this save file up time and again and get a different battle each time. ------------------ Billy Yank I don't define "my own" the way you want me to.

WOW! Following this has been a chore. I wasn't aware you could save from the support purchase page, then go back later to do the purchase. Here's how I do it: When I've fixed and/or upgraded my core units, I get to the support page and check the type of battle coming up. Depending on what it is, I then purchase my support units. Then I go to the deploy page, choose human deploy, THEN save. I also ALWAYS save the last battle of the prior scenario, so if on reflection I want to purchase something different, either fix/repair/change or support, I can. BUT, by going back like that I won't always get the same upcoming battle (if you do it enough times you probably will, but there's no guarantee - sneaky things, these computers). So I save my human deployment, before I actually deploy anybody; save in different slot the troops deployed, after I place them; and also save the last battle of each scenario. If you're buying support troops and they're not appearing for deployment, you may have a bug I discovered in one of the campaigns and you might try the "when-all-else-fails" trick of deleting the steel.prf file from your Matrix Games/Save folder. It regenerates when you start a new game, and is recommended as a quick first step for almost any problem that seems to come up. Good Luck. 1st Sgt, I looked over your save and I think Billy Yank has hit upon the problem. Being a generated campaign, when you start back from your save, it is not the same battle you had the opportunity to play before. That being true, it may not allow you to pick some units that in another type scenario you could pick. SO, that being the case, it is wise to pick your units you want, then save before going to human deploy. I think that will work for you.
