Valkyrie are you planning to release these as a shipset, or are you just showing us what is possible?

I'd love to have an Imperial/rebel shipset available.

I will release them when it's done if you want, I still need to finish some bits on the lambda and TIE fighter and make them into a 2D working image. I'll keep you informed. I'll probably release it 1 by 1

quick question about the 3d modeling program

I have been tring to find like a copy button so say when you set up 1 engine array you can copy the whole thing so you got 2 identical pieces.

I basically want to create one side of the ship then copy it n paste it so it forms a whole ship.

of course this might even not be possible as i have no clue what im doing, lol

I'm currenlty on lunch break at work so I can't show any screen shots. Basically when you select a whole object in "Body Selection Mode" there is a "Duplicate" function on the right click menu. If you choose "Duplicate" and then choose the axis you want to move it along, you can create an exact copy of your figure. You just need to move it along the axis to where you want it once the duplicate is created. When I get home I'll show some screen shots if that helps more.

Amazing pieces of work Valkyrie666. Did you create them yourself or did you get the models already created from a third party?

Just an update: I'm currently looking around for a good FREEWARE rendering program to do our ships with. Unfortunately I'm currenlty using Poser 7 to render my ships which is not free. I'm trying to find a program to demonstrate for the ship making tutorial how to render but there aren't that many good programs out there. I may have to do the next tutorial using Bryce 5.5 (which is free but not ideal).

Nice work Shark7. Looks very good!

my work (was working on it for a while now so that isn't a 1 day accomplishment :p) though the textures are from the world wide web :) and the extra details are done in 3ds max, I use wings for the main shapes, BTW for a free renderer try Blender (I do mine in vray+3dsmax 2010).

But as the game uses 2D you can create your details in your textures rather then on the model like the Lamda I created (most details are just photoshopped in the texture)

Here's a screen shot of what I'm talking about. Choose "Duplicate" in the "Body Selection Mode" and the next menu will ask what axis you want to move the object along once it is duplicated.

Tie Fighters got to be tough for a 2d top down perspective, because they don't have much detail on the wings?

yea that's why I tried to use this perspective otherwise a real top view only gives the wings as a line :p so this way you can atleast see something of the wings and 1 truster block cause 'I think' that there is only 1 exhaust allthough it has 2 engines (TIE= Twin Ion Engine)

I did finally finish one and came up with this. Gonna need more practice...mostly in the texturing department I think.

I'm not sure if the quality would be good enough to be in game, especially given the talent of some of the other folks that are already releasing stuff, but at least I managed to do it.

it ain't bad so don't give up, when texturing try to blend in some decay and shadows in it, less brighter colors and you'll see it'll look way better give it a go and compare your images you'll be suprised how easy it is and fill up your 200x200 square as much as possible because otherwise the hitboxes are way off and you get more detaill

btw a Kerkythea render (good Quality 1.30 min render time)

I did render mine with a default non-directional light, maybe sticking a directional light on it will change it up.

Still think I need to generate a UV map and actually take the time to texture it right, rather than just using material zones and shaders. Shaders are great, but they can't always give you the little details you need...the nuances like mis-matched hull plating colors, etc.

So, here's a classic newbie question:

How do you go from the Wings3D file format (*.wings) to a file format that can opened up in a renderer?

Kerkythea, for example supports 3DS, OBJ, XML, and KZK formats.

Am I missing something painfully obvious?

Cheers,
//TB

In Wings3D select your entire model, then go to "File" > "Export Selected" > 3D Studio (3DS).

3DS format is a pretty universal 3D format. Then import the 3DS file into Kerkythea.

Bump this back to the top.

Great tutorial Gary, thanks for the hard work.
Any chance you're going to continue with the render tut.?

I've been looking for a good Freeware rendering program to use for a tutorial but haven't had much luck. I haven't had a chance to figure out Kerkythea yet but it doesn't look too promising compared to what I've been using on my own ships. I like Poser 7 much better as a redering program. The lighting is easy to adjust and work with so you can get different effects and it's easy to apply mapped textures to objects. I think I'll do a tutorial on using Poser for the ships first and then if I can find something else to work with that is Freeware I'll do a second tutorial on that. Of course if someone has their own freeware program that they like to use for rendering I encourage them to step up and create a tutorial on it.

Even a tutorial in Poser is better than nothing for noobs like me. At least it will give an idea of how a render program works and wht it's for...
