[I've played a couple of games, or rather I have started a couple, so I know the basic game controls and so on, but in terms of actual game strategy this will very much be a learn as we go AAR. The Senate will gratefully consider all honorable advice. Oh, and this is likely to become fairly picture heavy. Consider yourself warned

I've included 19 other empires, one for each race, set up with with Normal Homesystem, Starting Size and Basic Tech. Also the option to allow independents to form empires has been enabled.

A note to those of you who might read this but don't actually have the game: This AAR will be written in an in-game history style manner. For color I will frequently allude to this or that person being consul, general and so on. These are purely my creation and don't have any actual in game representation]

Editor's Preface

The reader holds in his hands/paws/claws an epitome of Lucius Horatius' famous "History of Nova Roma from the Foundation of the Republic". The epitomizer has sacrificed literary style for brevity and replaced the often turgid speeches with lavish illustrations, the historical accuracy of which remains hotly disputed to this day. Published anonymously about two hundred years after the completion of the History, it rapidly outsold the original, much to the chagrin of the literary critics and the heirs of Horatius. Whether this popularity was due to pretty pictures or the fact it is short enough that it can be read from start to end within one lifetime must remain unknown. After a mere two months in sale further printing had to be halted due to the lengthy legal disputes with the Horatius Estate. With that case now having been settled by Imperial Decree, the Epitome can now finally be republished, 350 years after the death of Lucius Horatius.

Prehistory

Humanity's origin was long shrouded in myth. Legend told how man had originated on Earth (the name dating back to a pre-space faring age), the third planet in the Sol system. Where Sol was and how Earth had been lost, nobody longer knew. Exiled to a marshy moon on the outskirts of the galaxy man could only pine for the forests and hills of old Earth and dream up the most horrible fairy tales of how the splendor had been lost. Only one community was not content with merely dreaming. Drawing inspirations from one of the most celebrated legends of old Earth they reforged their community in the image of their forefathers. Armed with the patriotism and martial valor this gave them, they were after a long struggle able to unite all of humanity under one rule, dubbing their capital Nova Roma in their ancestors honor. And so it was that in December 2753 the first moonwide consular elections were held, in which Numerius Valerius and Sextus Claudius were elected consuls.

A short Gazette of the Republic at the time of its foundation

For those who slept through astrography, Nova Roma is located in the Ipeslun system on the north-eastern rim of the galaxy (as defined by the ISCA)

Ipselun is a fairly small solar system with only 3 planets.

The innermost planet, in those early days simply called Ipselun-1, has, if the old texts are to believed, a geography fairly similar to old Earth, in fact more so than Nova Roma itself. However due to the fractured nature of the pre-republic days, at the time of the Foundation humanity's presence on Ipselun-1 was restricted to hardy pioneers harvesting Bifuran Silk

Nova Roma is actually not a planet at all, but a moon of the gas giant Ipselun-2. (VP570 is the pre-Foundation designation of Nova Roma)
At the time of the Foundation humanity totaled a mere 3.7 billion individuals, all collected in one basket as it where.

The third planet, Ipselun-3, is a typical frozen gas giant orbited by a few obligatory barren rocks.

As can be seen at the time of the Foundation humanity had already established mining stations across the whole Ipselun system, however except for some exploration crews nobody had stepped outside. With a unified leadership this was to change rapidly.

2754
Consuls: Numerius Valerius and Sextus Claudius

Having won election on promise to bring humanity back to space the consuls set the shipyards buzzing with new orders. To the single exploration ship then in commission was to be added another 8. The Space Armada at this time was easily enumerated: 1 Escort 1 Frigate 1 Destroyer. As laughable this might seem to the modern reader, this had in fact been enough to handily crush the Miner's Collective in the Anarchist War of -49, but would obviously be insufficient should the explorers encounter a interstellar empire bent on humanity's destruction. 10 new Frigates were therefore also ordered.

To construct all these ships Nova Roma required Argon, an element not found in industrial quantities on any planet in the Ipselun system. A construction ship was there sent to establish a mining station on a gas planet in the Baraluo system

This, the first interstellar foray of the new Republic, proved to be symbolic in several unwelcome ways. Arriving at Baraluo-5 the construction ship found the place already occupied by a small space station. Excited of being the first humans to establish interstellar contact the construction crew at once hailed the station only to have their friendly greetings returned by a hail of energy beams as the simple bandits inhabiting the station came chasing after the construction ship.

The consul Numerius Valerius at once set out in the destroyer to punish the criminals, leaving Sextus Claudius to protect Nova Roma with the frigate.

This proved fortunate as another pirate ship, no doubt based at the same station, was soon reported attacking the mining stations of Ipselun-1

Setting out in the frigate Claudius soon destroyed the small pirate vessel.

At Baraluo-5 Valerius was fighting a losing battle against the combined assault of the pirate ship and station, but the timely arrival of Claudius turned the battle. The pirate cove was reduced to dust and the few surviving bandits brought home to Nova Roma for crucifixion.

The destruction of this criminal menace was not a moment too soon as the first colonists were now ready to leave Nova Roma.

In short order two colonies were established, first on Ipselun-1, now renamed Ostia

and secondly on Ficulea, a moon orbiting Baraluo-5, the very place where the criminals had had their base

At the end of the year the consuls could lay down office well knowing that they had eradicated a dangerous threat and taken the Republic to the stars
