Hi!

Here's something i started working on while waiting for the 1.03 patch....till now i think i spent more time making this then playing DW! :) It's far from finished, yet surprisingly functional. As the title implies, it's a tool to edit the races.txt file.

First screen you see is to load your mod.
If you have no mod installed, or would just like to browse the default options you can check the Theme path option and just leave it empty...now that i think of it that isn't very handy..should make that easier in a later update

Once it's loaded, and you've selected a race from the list, you'll see something like this
In a later update i'll add some explanations from the Customization guide to these fields, for now you just have a list of properties you can edit.

You can't edit everything yet. Race name, picture, colors, flag, design names and design images can't be edited for now. All of these depend on references to external files, that makes it a bit more complex from an editor POV. You can click the * tab to load another mod.

When you're done, click the O button for the options screen. Not many options yet, just two: save your mod, or close it. You can select a different path here, so you can open the default theme, make changes, and then save it to a different directory, effectively creating a new theme. The name of the theme, which is shown in the tab header, will also be updated to reflect the new location.

See attachment for download. It requires the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 to run, available here

Let's see...what else can i say..it should never ever overwrite anything in your default directory. If it does happen, let me know, because something is very wrong then.

UPDATE 1.2
  • added a Design Names editor
  • minor random changes to the UI

UPDATE 1.1.1:
  • fixed a crash when starting the program if DW wasn't installed at the default location

UPDATE 1.1, new in this version:
  • listbox instead of combobox for theme names on the load screen, double click to load a named theme
  • added default theme to the list
  • race picture index can now be selected
  • alternate race picture can be viewed
  • primary color visible, not editable
  • secondary color visible, not editable
  • flag design can be selected
  • design names visible, not editable
  • design images can be selected
  • races overview added, click on headers to sort*, double click to jump to race editor

*sorting is based on the underlying numerical value for race family, planet type, design focus and special component, not the textual representation

OMG
Nice one, I'll be using this!

Edit--
Works great, would it be possible to add the the extra information (ship set number etc.) just for information. so we know what numbers we are looking for if we want to change them manually?
I mess around with ship sets a lot and ATM I spend more time searching for the relevent number then I do editing it.

Edit again---

NVM, ship number is the one after the big numbers in the race file, flags and colours are the last 3 numbers before the homeworld name.
IMO this tool makes modding a doddle for me, I love it as it stands.

I can't seem to get it to start.  Just get an error when starting up.  Does this need to be extracted to a particular location to work (Distant worlds install directory or something?)

Hmm..odd. It doesn't need to be extracted anywhere specific.

There seem to be two seperate problems then?
Kamorius can't load his theme, but for murteas and Sarissofoi the program doesn't even start?

@murteas and Sarissofoi, did 1.0 work? (available here)

@Kamonrius: do you get the "program will shut down" message? Or another message?

Lol, for me it was the opposite. The 1.0 does not work, but the 1.1 works now.

Nice work .

I believe this version should fix your problem.
It crashed if the game wasn't installed at the default location, murteas probably experienced the same issue.

Either way, this version gives more info if it crashes, so i don't have to guess ;)

Bubblewrap, that fixed it for me. And yes, 1.0 worked, but 1.1 did not. Are you releasing the source for this program?

In any case, thank you for sharing with us and responding quickly to our problem. Thanks and great job!

This still isnt working for me :/ the error I get in the program's page when trying to load my theme or default.

Cannot find DepenedacyProperty or PropertyInfo for property named 'Stringformate'. Property names are case sensitive. Error at Object 'System.windows.Data.Binding' in markup file 'DWEditor;component/raceeditor.xaml'.

Ah..that's annoying. Looks like .NET Framework 3.5 sp1 is required, not just 3.5.
You can get it here

Just found this.  This is great.  No more messing with editing the text file by hand!

I truly appreciate the time and effort you put into this.

Many, many thanks.

Is it possible to assign a ship names list to each race now?

You can assign a design name list. how this is shown in game I'm not sure.
The actual ship name file doesn't seem to be race specific, and IIRC there are only 14 design name files so some will be shared.

Not yet through this editor, it only shows the index. I would like to be able to show the actual names that they correspond to, as well being able to edit those, before allowing people to edit the number.

That's a bit of a disappointment. The game is really not very moddable.

How practically you use the design name index to give a list of ship names to a particular race?

There is a file designnames.txt (or something close to that) in the distant worlds folder. This file contains all the design names, for each index there is a comma seperated line with names. I'm not sure now if the first line should have index 0 or index 1.

Another update, 1.2, see first post attachment for the download. Added a Design Names editor and some minor random changes to the UI.

I think this will be the last major update from me for a while, at least until the game is more moddable. For those interested, you'll find the source code attached to this post, i have used VS 2008 C# Express for this. If you want to release your own version, let me know...if there is enough interest maybe we could set up a sourceforge project or something.
