Strategic Command gone gold. Hallelujah.

Congrats Matrix Games on the 89% for UV in PCGamer. When I get the cash that's my next purchase.

Hmmm thanks for this beauty nyarlathotep.

For those that are used to me complaining about wanting this that or the other thing in a computer game (and are currently picking their jaws up off the floor), this game gets a thumbs up from Les.

Now that is not to say that just because I say it, that it automatically makes it computer gaming perfection (well I like to think that people wait on my opinions with baited breathe hehe). But we all know how hard I am to please.

We all know if your tactical game looks like ASL you get a compliment from me.

So to follow up on my first game demo of Strategic Command that I played (I was playing as Allied), this game is my idea of A3R on the computer (A3R = Advanced Third Reich).
No of course it isn't really A3R anymore than Steel Panthers is really ASL. But for those that remember the actual Third Reich software release, this game is not that game at all (it actually looks like I will be putting it on my christmas list (who knows, right now it is in first lace eh).

Battlefront.com is going to be seeing more of me soon.

For those that have been watching the "Decline of Wargaming" poll, its time to stop pondering. There is NO decline if people are producing games like this. This game is maybe a step back to some, but hey, hex lovers rejoice, this game looks like are beloved board games with a very user friendly interface.

And another nice perk, it likes Windows XP (Pro in my case maybe that makes a difference here). I played a full game (well I played till France got trashed and then decided I had seen my needs met in assessing it).

Now all I have to do is wait for it to hit the market (no I don't pre order anything, I will buy it not a second before it is on actually on sale). They are taking pre orders for you folks that do that sort of thing, hope they don't spend long getting it out there though.

Good review, Les. You just might have helped BF sell me one of their games.

I too like the old board game look in computer games. Many of the newer games with their megabites of graphics just look awful and are hard to visualize. I really like SPWAW but the terrain graphics are just too much and it's very hard to see the different elevations. I just don't know why they can't make the base terrain stand out against all the trees and such. I actually have to use my mouse as a scout to check out terrain before I move anything 'cause I can't tell if I'm going up a hill or descending untill I actually move into a hex. And I still haven't been able to figure out just how the LOS works. Sometimes you can see through trees and sometimes you can't. It's quite frustrating when you move to a kill position and then realize there is a fricking slope in the way that is totally invisible. There is enough fog of war in the game without the graphics having to add more. At least with Advanced Squad Leader you can just glance at the board and see what's what. Why can't they do that with a computer game?

Hehehe Dave you hit the nail smack darn on the head there eh.

I love Steel Panthers, but even still,I so often move a unit that gets shot at, only to exclaim hey how the heckdid he see that move. Then other times you find a great field of fire, and all of a sudden you can't see squat heheh.

And often what appeals to me in a software game is when the game is just a game, not a you are there simulation. The FPS crowd lives for that level of detail, but its really quite pointless to me once I go past platoon level.

Often all I want is an icon graphic that says that's my tank not yours. Often a graphic that says the hex is a woods hex, not there is a tree specifically there.

All that is fine for the gamey programs, but at the Panzerblitz level of gaming, it serves me no real purpose.

But I am a grognard and not worried that I am a fossil a dinosaur that wants dull boring looking games.
I liked Strategic Cmmand primarily because it's easy to play. The graphics will be to some very dull, the animations, well I don't recall seeing any really.
If you need fancy graphics and nifty sounds and animations, hmmm go play a FPS game.

Clearly Dave and me what to play a board game with the convenience of a computer. The younguns will be old men eventually and realise that our way is the best way:D :D

Hah. I just thought of a new name for these graphics heavy computer wargames. "Baywatch" games. Real nice to look at but not much logic involved.

I've repainted the graphics on many of my computer games (the ones that have open files to do it), and I just can't understand why others don't see how much more fun it makes playing the game.

But then, when I compare current movie special effects with the movies I watched as a kid, I can understand why younger players don't care how a game plays as long as it looks good. That's too bad, because the future of computer wargames is definitly going to be more graphics and animations over playability and functionality. I guess that's why I like HPS's games so much. At least they try to please both crowds by giving you the option for a standard boardgame look or rich graphics. I guess we're just living in the past, Les.

Don't get me wrong people, SPWAW is a great game and plays very well. It's just too dang hard to tell what's going on sometimes. Any of you ever look at real military contour maps? They don't look like SP maps. They are simplified for a reason. To make things more efficient.

I'm a gamer from a while back, board and computer. Ever since my Atari 400 with M.U.L.E., text adventures, Star Raiders, Eastern Front, and many many more.

One thing I have learned is never narrow your perspective regarding gaming. Each genre has it's strengths and weaknesses, and if you try them you may find one aspect of each you enjoy.

I'm glad you were so discreet as to say it was his "armpit" you could smell ...

Graphics for Grognards Lesson I - make 'em functional and relevant. If I want - ahem - the above-mentioned smell, I will raid my life savings and head for a lap-dancing bar.

I will now proceed to entangle the entire area

Well since I located SC I have been wandering in and out of Battlefront specifically the General Forum and the SC forum logically enough.

Sadly I must say I havent reeeeally found their forums to be overly enticing. But that's not a general negative comment, its just that the site is mainly a site devoted to Combat Mission.

And unfortunately even with as much gushing as I have seen for CM, it is not my cup of tea. Eventually all the forums seem to be saturated in pro CM individuals (guess that would be like complaining that Matrix was to saturated with Steel Panthers fans though).

In the end I think my participation on the site will be greatly reduced to just keeping in touch with key SC developements, but I don't forcast being much of a fixture on their forums.
