Just started a new game with 1.04 and my homeworld is in the same system as another races' homeworld. Sure makes a challenge right at the start.

We've seen some reports - I have not had it happen to me personally but it is apparently possible. I'll see if we can reduce or eliminate the frequency of that occurring when things are set to "random".

I had it a lot of time with 1.03 before.

The first game I create with 1.04b, I had 2 others races in the same system.

I always played Human with 1400 stars. The other races were always Humans too.

Could one of you that is seeing this frequently possibly post your exact galaxy settings? I wonder if there is something odd going on with certain combinations of settings that makes this much more likely as I am not seeing this happen _at all_ in my test games.

also if you start a game without max empires and you have an independent colony in your system, best to colonise quickly before they go interstellar and become a competiting empire.

Start any game, go to editor and add some independents to empty worlds in your systems. As long as your not set the game to a maximum number of AI opponents, one of the independent colonies should become a new empire.

Yay!

Someone else reported this.

This happened to me in two of my first three 1.03 starts. I thought they were minor races like in GalCiv (which is my my thread on this topic is useless, it has a terrible headline).

I believe, like some others, that choosing random locations for alien races creates a percentage chance of getting the "same system" location (which is selectable when you custom create an alien race for your game).

This forced me to go to custom created alien races all set to average or distant.

The settings I used to use:

Human Monarchy
1000 Star Galaxy
No Pirates
Few Alien races
Generate 6 (or 4) random alien races
Agreeable HW
Few Monsters
Everything else default.

As I said, I now custom create the alien races.

Well, just for completeness, I have never had this happen in something like 15-18 restarts in all.
I suspect it is a function of the nubmer of alien empires you set in your initial setup -- I tend to have a fairly low number, often 7-9, in a 1000-world system -- because, like in Civilization, I like to expand some before I have to meet the neighbors!

My galaxy settings (always the same) :

- Spiral galaxy
- 1400 stars
- Expansion : Starting
- Agression : Normal
- Researd : Normal
- Space creatures : few
- Pirates : Normal

- Galaxy Starting Location : Random
- Home System : Excellent
- Tech Level : Basic
- Governnment : Democracy
- Human

10 empires added, all with the same parameters all set to random but :
- Size : Starting
- Tech level : Basic
- Home System : Normal

Independent alien colonies to start new empire checked.

Victory Conditons : Sandbox.

I had it happen to me once. Maybe there can be a option added to prevent that from happening? I say option since some players might not mind or might actually like it if their neighbours start in the same system as them...it sure does present some exciting possibilities heh.

I think if they want that to happen, they can manually set it to happen.

Most who want "random" starting locations probably don't want another empire in their home system. :)

i've only had it happen to me in random twice when I first got the game... the second time we we're 3 in the same system! after a while as I understood the game, I've been 'trying' to get another AI in my 'same system' for days, but I started to think the 'same system' option meant the same sector, because they never spawn in my system, only in the same sector.

is it WAD that this can happen, or is it a bug? myself I like it that it can happen, combined with little stars and lots of advanced AI... sure beats hoping for a indy in your home system at start, even with teeming on

It's happening to me so consistently when I try for a starting location in the Far Regions with the following set up, that I no longer even try to start in the Far Regions.

Version – 1.0.3.0

Game Setup:
Galaxy – Spiral
Galaxy Size – Standard (700 Stars)
Alien Life – Normal
Expansion – Starting
Aggression – Normal
Research Speed – Normal
Space Creatures – Few
Pirates – Normal

Empire Name – Ackdarian Republic
Galaxy Starting Location – (I tried starting two games in the Far Regions, but I always had another empire in my home system with me, so I gave up on that option – too many AI empires in too small of a galaxy I guess).
Home System – Normal
Size – Starting
Tech Level – Basic
Government – Republic
Race – Ackdarian

Starting Empires – 17, all except the Gizurean (due to their having the highest population growth rate in the game) and the Shandar (due to being the nicest reptiles), plus each of these are from the only two families with four races. All the AI empires have Random Governments, Basic Tech Levels, Normal Home Systems, and Random Proximity to the Player.

Do not allow independent colonies to start new empires.

Victory: Territory – Control 25% of the Colonies in the Galaxy.

are you guys getting other EMPIRES or independent colonies?
because there is a huge difference between the two.

other AI colored empires that have diplomatic relations. yep huge difference, indy is free pop+tax, other empire means you have to fight for the free lunch

doesnt seem to happen unless things are on random. when it happened to me, it was either dwarf/tiny/small + ring + 8-10 auto set up AIs. when setting up the AI manually, i've yet to see it happen

hasn't happened to me yet...
but since its clearly a bug you could just restart (since you notice it as soon as you started the game)

i'm pretty sure it's just a matter of doing random in locations (atleast with 1.03) when specifying AIs instead of auto generating. roll it enough times and you'll have them in your home system. it happened to me when i first got the game. i gave up then because I didn't know wth i was doing seeing how i just started playing, but now I wish I could force it to happen, but it doesn't work.

even though there's a 'same system'  option in the distance option when specifying AIs, which really doesn't work anyway. it's probably a problem with the AI placement in the other added galaxy types that the devs didn't bother to test, which is all to bad, having an AI right smack on top of you from the start is good fun

Umm, no. It's not fun. And it doesn't make for a very balanced game.

My guess is that "Random" is choosing randomly between Same System, Near, Average, and Distant, with some weighting, meaning there is a significant percent change of it choosing "Same System". Additionally, setting them all to Distant is also a broken setting: Rather than creating a galaxy in which all the races are distributed distantly from you, but evenly around the map, or even randomly around the map, the game distributes ALL of them in the SAME CORNER of the map. This makes the game far less interesting because now the AI is crippled, as opposed to merely not in your face.
