Well I always wanted to do this with the editor but I never have bothered. I just started a new game with the new public beta patch, and I have a neutron star beside me, with a planet orbiting around it. The thing I like also is, the planet is really orbiting really far away from the Neutron Star.

I never seen a neutron star with any planets in any games I played, so I thought they had no planets orbiting them. Well it was a nice change to see.

So I was just wudnering, what things have you guys or gals, seen that you never seen before playing DW. I am just wundering what more is there awaiting us in DW that we might not have seen before. Hmmm.... what about a Star orbiting a black hole? That would really be interesting now eh?

I had a 3 way fight between 2 pirate factions and myself at a colonization target last night, made me chuckle.

For me,

I got the World Destroyer. It took about 1 hour of gametime to get running but once it was running.... I showed those Ants who was boss! The special ability of the World Destroyer (don't want to spoil it) is fantastic!

Thinking back, it was like the first time I nuked a city in Civilization. Only better. And, the game didn't crash!

It should be that most know what a World Destoyer does, even if they have not controlled one.

Heh. But, yeah, Shanicus, super, uber weapons are cool. I think that if a technology exists in the game then we should be able to research it later; even if we don't find the technologies..

Thanks for not spoiling what the world destroyer can do. I have a feeling what it can do, (the name perchance? LOL) but I havn't found one yet. Only played up to begining mid games, and then I start over if I am in the red too much, or trying the new patches. I keep finding new tactics so I want to see and learn if I start over differently what happens.

I just love the begining of expansion of this game, once it's done, I miss it, so another reason why I start all over again.

Re: World Destroyer.

Davor, really? You haven't found one yet?

Seems I find one in every game I play! Once, I found one in the same solar system as the world with the super rare spice! So, I got both!

I was kinda hoping that there would be an option to turn the random event of the World Destroyer off so that it wouldn't be in every game. Perhaps it isn't in every game and I just got lucky?

if no one minds, can someone tell me exactly what it does? I haven't gone through the motions of aquiring one yet, and I guess I'm wondering does it glass or blast it up, or am i gonna not be spoiled and have to actually get one

This thread is just screaming for some kinda sophomoric humor (e.g., "Never saw such big rings around Uranus!"), but since I'm a distinguished gentlemenly type I won't stoop to that level.

Alright, lostsm, I will give you a decent hint of what it does. Clearly, the incomplete ship has been inspired by the Death Star from Star Wars. Probably Episode 6 (Return of the Jedi) because in the game (similarly to the movie where the Rebels attack the Death Star at the Endor moon in the hopes of destroying it before it is completed), the World Destroyer has been abandoned and is unfinished. So, you need to get some constructors out to it pronto and defend them while they "repair" it before other empires figure out what you are up to.

OK, best example...

In Star Wars, Episode 4, Darth Vader has captured Princess Leia and brings her on board the original Death Star.

He threatens to destroy a planet unless she tells him where the rebel base is. She tells him. Regardless, he destroys the planet with the full power of the Death Star's super laser beam.
In the game, the World Destroyer does a similar thing. Only better. Because you control it! Plus, it has a nifty countdown. And, the super laser can be shot at ships, too, but sometimes it will miss (very disappointing). Plus, the planet (when hit) will give out splash damage to nearby ships, moons and even your World Destroyer... so be careful!

All in all, it is completely awesome and the whole thing looks just right. Plus, other empires get pissed at you regardless of your reasoning and slap on sanctions or declare war due to your "diabolical reputation". It really, really works and is a fantastic part of the game.

oh yes....i like how the world destroyer is practically indestructible and i admire the possibilities that it offers that might help you reduce your in-game lag i.e. by directly reducing the number of planets present. Well done matrix games!

Actually, it isn't indestructible. I have played around with it a fair bit. Certain weapons can suck the shield down pretty fast.

But, it seems to me that, it is the most powerful single "ship". With a half decent fleet to protect it, watch out! It is so much fun to attack the homeworld of your worst enemy and just ignore his fleet frantically trying to defend the planet while you power up the "fully operational" weapons systems!

By the way, this ship convinced me that it is possible to attack more than one target at once because, it certainly does!

And, it even refuels its own fleet! I love the thing!

But, I would like an option to have it NOT appear randomly in a game.

I'm thinking I finally found this ship. It was surrounded by a bunch of derelict ships + some space grubs. I'm having to send in a constructor to finish building it apparently. The weird thing is that right after I found this, another of my automated explorers found the death ray tech + some super construction tech at the same time.

I have yet to actually even meet another race beyond pirates. (1.03)

The world destroyer isn't indestructible. In fact, not only is it not indestructible, but it lost a shootout against my construction ship. I arrived at a World Destroyer project just as the AI finished it, and I shot it down with my construction ship, alone.

Really? That sounds bizarre! Unless you have an uber construction ship of some kind!

I really cannot fathom how you could have done that. Maybe some kind of bug?

Knowing Fishman, it probably was an "uber construction ship"
He likes his guns lol

I never even knew they had something like a world destroyer. Is it something you find or is it a tech you can eventually research or both?

Well there was this minor race, I was going to take over by force since I couldn't do it through colonization techniques, but got distracted from someone else. Well just as I was going to take this minor by force, but I can't now, since this minor is no longer a minor but a major. I knew it could be done, but I never seen it before. I just think it's so cool, that a minor can become a major. I have picked in the begining of the game, 5 races, and now I am at 8, me included. So I like the univers grows and never gets stale.

World Destroyers have drive speeds in the single digits. My construction ship had only about 20 guns, but it had a speed of 30ish, so was easily able to stay ahead of the World Destroyer and pelt it into submission.

Davor:

Yeah, I like that feature, too. It really does keep the game "fresh".

Fishman:

I didn't notice that it was so slow like that! Except 1 time when I accidently flew it into a "Special Zone" that disabled the sub-light drives. Man, that was a mistake!
Seems the AI really dropped the ball on you! Chasing your construction ship? Alone? And no support ships came to help? And, thought the chase was futile, the AI didn't give up? That is weak!

I have seen the AI retreat a lot from failed invasions, surprise attacks and sudden defeats. So, the whole idea that the AI would allow the greatest single weapon in the game to chase your Constructor seems rather lame. I just hope you got a good chuckle out of it!

With the lame drive speed AI ships have, support would never have arrived in time. Plus, the AI isn't exactly something with a focussed battle plan.

Giving up would be impossible. You can't flee from a ship that is faster than you and carries a warp interdictor. I don't like it when people run away from me while I am killing them. Plus, it doesn't cost a lot of space on a ship the size of a constructor, and you never know when it might come in handy...

Eh, it happens. Remember that incident with the thermal exhaust port?

Also, I'd like to note that EVERYONE tends to get rather ticked off when you use the World Destroyer's special weapon. I actually ended up using it one time too many last night and my carefully tended to empire split in half amidst a civil war. Taking said World Destroyer with it.

Heh, I figured something like that would happen, which is pretty much why such things tend to be useless in games. It's like the old MOO2 Stellar Converter, which is actually an implement of galactic terraforming, but you really have to twist the game's arm and dance in hoops to do what you REALLY want to do with it, which is "demolish uninhabited crap planets". It'd be interesting if you could use the World Destroyer as a mining tool, smashing open uninhabited planets to make it easier to get at their tasty innards.

I have seen the planets reduced to asteroid fields so that just might be possible!

PS: A Warp Interdictor on your Constructor? Brilliant idea! And, that clearly explains why the PD didn't retreat.
