I did some head-to-head testing of naval reaction in Coral Sea scenario and found out that I have no idea how it works. I wasn't able to launch naval attack at all !!!

For example I placed two combat fleets in 5-6 hexes from one another and set them naval reaction 6, treat tolerance absolute, proceed - direct.

Non of fleets reacted despite they see each other by float planes.

Then I put one fleet to bombard Tulagi and another was on reaction near Munda - there was no reaction.

So how the hell works naval reaction ??????

Try Normal-Normal...instead of Direct-Absolute...and hope for some good die rolls.

I haven't seen that feature work since PacWar. I think it only happens when the two TFs find themselves in the same hex by accident. That said, I'd love for someone to correct me and tell us how it works.

who say´s it´s working?

Just like anywhere else in the game, you´re better off doing it yourself than to have the AI "trying" to do it for you. In at least 9 out of 10 cases you will not get the result with reaction you want to.

I have seen a surface TF reacting once. The TF (a CL and a couple of DDs) was at PM, "remain in station", homeport was Townsville. They reacted to a Japanese SC TF including Yamato and another BB and were completely wiped out...

Maybe that's the trick: Don't sit in your homeport. But I'm not sure about this.

Use the Patrol option rather than remain on station. Or have the TF docked at its home port with a destination of its home port.

I'm surprised people are having problems with SCTF's not reacting. In my games, they react frequently. Make sure you have an aggressive commander, have your SCTF on Patrol and to "remain on station" and make sure the react range is set to 6. While your group won't react every time, it will do so often.

Having a SCTF out on patrol with a react range of 6 is a superb way to deal with night-time marauding bombardment TF's.
