Here's a moves-mini-movie from turns 70 through 97 showing the developement of some bulges, pockets, and pull-backs.

Hm, after a glance at your tanks I'm kinda worried (by the way: cut the first four types of your tank-screenie and show us Panzer IV in the future, much more important ...) - you should start to preserve some tank-regiments in the autumn after case blue in order to survive his winter offensive and the following years ... i havent seen Panzer IV losses, but (if i remember correctly) your already way beyond the historical number of destroyed tanks (but on the other hand your position is stronger than the historical one, i guess^^).

the situation at leningrad looks good, will be interesting to see how the russian player reacts.

greets,
Ribak

The German tank units are so outclassed and outnumbered by the Soviet armored forces that the amount of Panzer IV's is irrelevent IMHO. I think that the Germans need to be trying to maintain a good stock of HRS's to survive a massive soviet winter offensive.

I finally finished Axis turn 98 and published the AAR here:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/tx0zdmem1jn/DAHD FITE game turn 98 AAR forum copy.html

I captured Voronezh ( worth 5% ) and gained a bunch of hexes and started some pockets etc.  It's getting exciting.

Larry, one of the two Soviet battleships, the Marat, was sunk by two German dive bombers in 36 feet of water on 23 September 1941. They refloated what was left of it and used the remaining turrets (three rear most) for bombardment. The other battleship, October Revolution, was damaged a couple of times but never sank.

The Soviet ships at Leningrad can reconstitute. It's highly questionable whether that should be allowed. However, given the fact that one of the battleships was indeed 'sunk' and refloated may indicate that it's historically accurate for the capital ships. But how many times?

I would question the soviet armored and mech divisions still existing more than the battleships reconstituting. By the end of 1941 virtually all of the armored divisions had been disbanded and used to form many of the armored brigades the Soviet gets in 1941. The mech divisions had been turned into rifle divisions. So, not only does the Soviet have the tank and mech divisions, he has the units that were derived from them as well!

I found a picture of the Oct. Rev. that you may like. Or not.

second one: catch schlüsselburg (near leningrad) - by autumn you should be able to mop the whole (by then nearly starved) city up - dont go for nova lagoda (as historical), from this position it seems nearly impossible in the next few weeks.

It seems that Leningrad has a supply point. So capturing Schlusselburg doesn't put it out of supply. Capturing Nova Lagoda would so it seems that N.L. is a good objective and S. isn't so much so. But your idea to drive it out of supply first before assaulting is a good one.

Good you checked, told ya I'm not good for anything

I was probably confusing my FITE-games and real history, where they finally cut the supply at schlüsselburg by that forcing the sowjets to open the road of life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_of_Life).

Is there a similar effect in the winter months (when lake ladoga is frozen)?

Not that I'm aware of. With the supply point in Leningrad a road of life ( like in RL ) isn't of much effect.

I put together a moving map showing the moves around Leningrad from turn 10 to turn 50 just to see how fast the front line moves.  It's a slow mover I found out. I skipped the mud turns but it's still 10M bytes big.
You can find the movie here:

I think I may have captured Rostov.  Dave might take it away from me in his turn so I'm not sure if I have it or not.

I thought I might mention some potential problem I had so you guys won't have it too.

I moved my Slavic units by boat from their home port to a spot adjacent to the port they were going to attack and without thinking assigned them to attack immediately after moving them.  I didn't check how many movement points they had already used to get there because the distance they moved was so small.  I noticed that the attack was going to use 50% of the turn and decided that maybe they didn't have to attack in round 1 ( and burn half of my turn ) so I cancelled the attack and noticed that both of them went immediately to 0 movement points and went back to embarked mode adjacent to an enemy unit ( and therefore were under risk of being attacked ).  The next turn ( Dave didn't attack them thank goodness ) in round 1 again, without moving them at all I assigned them to attack the same enemy unit and I noticed that the attack was going to take 50% of the turn again.  I didn't want to have them stationary, in embarked mode, adjacent to an enemy unit and under risk of attack again so I decided to let the attack proceed even though it was going to burn half of my turn.

I'm saying this because I'm thinking maybe it's a smallish bug in the TOAW game engine.  On the other hand it just MAY be a feature to do my Slavic units this way.  I'm not sure.  Either way I don't like the way it treated my units ( reverting to embarked mode, movement points going to zero after the cancellation of an attack, and taking 1/2 of the turn even though they didn't move at all ).

The speed is gigantic ... both the updates and the offensive

Hows supply situation? (Dont need a pic, just your opinion.)
Carry on with the good work

Greets,

EDIT: Actually, it would be great if you two guys could post your losses before and after "case blue", just to give your followers a better insight. What do you think?

Ps: Love the historical pictures, keep it up

Indeed. IMO we have good tempo going on (about 1.2 turns/day).

According to the following picture I lost about 15K HRS squads during case blue. Whoa. I'm wondering if Dave lost something like that in Rifle Squads. My boys are down to 1/2 strength now. I'd better rest them before the winter offensive starts. Also, I checked the losses in turn 103 I had in my game against Curt Chambers and my losses this time are way way more than in my game with Curt. In my Curt game in turn 103 I had something like 37K assigned HRS's and this time I have only something like 29K HRS's.

Case Blue concludes and now we're back to the regular war.  My boys are tired so I gave them a day off.

well I do not think is a bug. It is a (maybe little) known fact that an ambush attack will take 50% of its turn to start. I believe it was put so to simulate the dificulty and extra planning of an amphibious attack. And I do not think this is mentioned in the manual.

Dave did another one of his pull-back's and I'm hot in pursuit. The graphic below shows the situation at the beginning of round 2 and I'm doing mop-up with some units while other units are racing after the Soviets. Dave left some units behind to screen his withdrawl and I expect that perhaps 5/8 of them will be able to escape but I think maybe I've caught a large portion of them in a series of small pickets. I dropped the paratroopers to help cut off the supply to a rather large pocket and I'm hoping to get them out of there before they get destroyed. I'm surprised that Dave's airforce allowed me to drop them since he has air superiority ( 37 to 68 his favor ). I'm posting this picture here as a sort of teaser since I'm going to be posting pics like this one in the AAR for this turn.

Turn 104

17. June - 20. June 1942
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry that i haven't updated Soviet side of AAR for awhile. But here's finally update to you guys. At first, let's check losses. here's what lost during Axis offensive Case Blue.
(also, note that my rate/turn (green circles) has decreased much because i lost many cities during the offensive (Rostov, Voronezh, Orel, Murmansk)

Last turn (T 103) Southern front started pull-back operation, old line were broken at many areas and way too slim. However new line is almost built up and ready for action.
Honestly, i need to stop doing large pull-backs like this now or Fulkerson is in Stalingrad within two months... I'm also little bit worried about overall-situation in south; Larry brought many new infantry divisions here and lots of artillery from other fronts... Maybe i need to think plan B?

Bad thing is that when Leningrad falls, then Finns are allowed to cross borders

Why aren't you attacking? You have plenty of tank brigades and shock divisions that could wipe the ground with those soviet ifnantry regiments that are holding together Larry's line...
