Feb 11: The Japs make no attack on land today. Even thought the report of Jap troop strength declined, I don't trust the information as a new Jap naval support unit showed up. 3rd Marine Def. Bn. dented or put big holes in about 6-7 transports and small escorts today. The Japs responded with about 200 carrier sorties against the guns of 3rd Def. Bn., but at least 90% are still operational. Against orders, one of the B-26 squadrons sorteid against the transports without escort. Two were lost. The Arid-Adapted Taro Air Force at Noumea is down to 21 operational P-39's, 7 F4F's, 8 B-26 and 7 PBY's. I disbanded one B-26 squadron and sent the 5 operational SBD's resting in Suva back into the fight. Another understrength B-26 squadron was flown in from Suva as well. 3 replacement P-39's were ferried in but there are no more F4F's to be had. The Jap carriers appear to be moving away to the NW(350 mi off now). Arid-Adapted Taro Air Force is therefore ordered to attack again.

Several companies of armor are about 5 days away to the East. 8th Marine Regt., which began emergency disembarkation at Samoa is now stuck with it's infantry ashore and heavy vehicles still embarked. AE requires one to be careful about such things. Pretend I didnt read the rules. I will therefore send the heavy equipment to Noumea first and bring in some fresh AP's to load the remainder fo 8th Marine and get them to Noumea as well. If successful, that will leave Nouma with 2 regts of Marines, a potent force should the line hold at Koumac and the Japs be forced to bring the kitchen sink. There options would include a landing at La Foa and march on Noumea , a direct assault on Noumea or a reinforced landing at Koumac. In either case, it will require a Jap division equivalent and all 4 carriers. This will keep them busy for a while.

The Free French detachment no longer have any thoughts of surrender, indeed they are positively ebullient, with morale in the high 90's.

*****Free French Detachment HQ, New Ullapool, 19:40, Feb. 11, 1942*******

A young USAAF Lt. in sun-worn uniform sits around a fire, expertly playing a mandolin, even though he had never held one until 5 minutes before. He sings a wistful tune....

......Then you bet you'd better finally decide!
And say yes to one and let the other one ride
There's so many changes, and tears you must hide
Did you ever have to finally decide?

When he finishes there a few seconds of contemplative silence as every man around the fire thinks about women he has known.

"Vive la femme" the bearded Lt. offers.

"Vive la femme!" comes the response. Glasses of cognac are raised and consumed.

"Vive la France!", offers the Lt. as he stands.

"Vive la France!" comes the reply. Someone begins to sing La Marseillaise.....

What exactly do you mean by "dirty"......ewwwwwww

My Mayan housekeeper takes the LONGEST showers..30 minutes at least...and she is only about 4ft8. Madre de Dios! What is she doing in there?

I told stalker girl about it and her solution was immediate, "Mandrake, you idiot, take out the detachable shower head". Her productivity is way up.

7 1/2 lbs (est.), 12 in (diameter). Mother and ...erm...effluent are doing well.

I took Pinhead (the rescue dog) out on the horse trail about 12 hrs after the Maalox incident. I pretty much knew it was her. The other dog's head is too big to do something that stupid. About 1/2 mile into the walk she pulled up on the leash and her eyes got real big. She scrambled into the vinca groundcover. I thought her hind quarters were going to leave the ground (she only weighs 16 lbs). I knew I shouldn't have laughed but it was about the funniest thing I have seen..ever. The blessed event was blessed because it happened outside the house. I went over to Santa Maria de la Atoche (or something like that) and went inside to say a couple of Hail Mary's in thanks. I forgot the words. As a compromise I resolved to be nice to other drivers on the way to work. "Big deal", you say? You should see some of the ass hole drivers around here.

I also put away all the medicines. God helps those who help themselves. Well, that's what I heard.

Good question. Batavia is beseiged and is low on supply. There are half a dozen serviceable RAF Brewsters there to keep the Sallys honest. The burg SE of Batavia is also beseiged (by some Type II's), so the defenders of Batava likely have no retreat option. The last Jap attack came in at 1:1. Batavia wont hold much longer.

On Sumatra, Palembang fell some time ago but the oil facilities were dinged pretty well by the Uglofortresses before they got fighter cover in.

Lord Admiral Sprior sent some volunteer minelayers on a suicide mission to Palembang. One of them, at least, succeded in committing suicide.

The amazing thing to me is they have let us get away with the reinforcment of Lautem up to now. They could really scramble our cheesy hammy eggs if they wanted to as they have carriers and BB's in the area, whereas the heaviest serviceable combatant we have is Boise. Warspite is on her way South of OZ.

Just out of curiosity, is there a patron saint or other religious heirarchy for 'blessed' acts like you describe? There's one for lost keys, real estate sales, animals (in general) and so forth, you figure that somewhere in the pantheon (albeit kind of down the totem pole a ways) there's gotta be one that is more fitting for your prayers of thanks.

Here's my vote for the patron saint...

Well, the most famous one is St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers.

Then, there is my favorite, St. Agnes of Las Vegas. She is the patron saint of double down on hard nine vs. a dealer 5 or 6 showing.

What you are proposing, it seems, is a patron saint for narrowly avoided disasters. I will have to do some research.

As opposed to a soft 9? i'm usually too busy chain smoking and looking for the cocktail watress to worry about St. Agnes, but I'll definitely remember her next time Sounds like she might help when the friggin' fourth 8 shows and I'm making my 3rd split against the 10

PS - hope the doggie is ok...i'm definitely NOT going to tell this story to my wife...the dog lover she is, she would be in a fugue for a week minimum...

The dog is fine...and she really isn't stupid as dogs go...although I am tempted to put out an empty bottle of Maalox and see what she does with it.

As for resplitting 8's 3 times vs. a 10, I would recommend St Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, just be aware you may have a wait to talk to him in a casino. If you get caught on hold in the phone tree, try hitting "9" over and over, you may get through to the receptionist. And don't use any swear words while you are on hold. They monitor.

Do you mean where the 605 meets the 91, or is there another? Been a while since I was in the area.

I think there is an Indian Casino where the 405 meets the 605. It is in the Southeast corner.

OK. There is one on the North side of the 91 too, near either the 605 or 705 (I forget - whichever one is further West).

Feb. 12, 1942: The IJN commander (back from RR in Spain and France...and a tour of the sub pens at Brest no doubt) pulled the old Jimmy leg routine on me again (for the 4th time). The Jap carriers ceased their northward movement and are now about 300 mi NW of Koumac. They appear to have united the two carrier TF's and are shepherding a large group of transport TF's. I can't tell if these are more troops coming in already or the damaged transport stream headed back to Truk or Rabaul or Shortlands.

There are still quite a number of transports unloading at Koumac. They are taking considerable damage from 3rd Marine Def Bn guns. Another huge, 200 plane carrier raid on 3rd Def. Bn. was conducted today. All of IJA 4th Div. appears to be ashore now but there was no attack today. I think they are resting and bringing supply ashore. I sent the P-39's on a sweep over Koumac but they made no contact. The B-26's came in behind them to attack the Jap ground troops but were somehow intercepted by 19 Zeroes despite the negative sweep by the P-39's and the fact that the Jap carriers are 300 miles away. I suppose this was a LRCAP of some sort. 4 B-26's and one SBD were lost with no effect on the target.

The B-26's have just been cannon fodder but they must be losing some zeroes to attrition due to the extreme distances here. I moved another understrength squadron of B-26's from Suva and chopped all the ranges down to 80 miles to cover Noumea only. Suva is now a level 4 airfield. I moved in one squadron of B-17E's from Canton. 161st Inf. Regt. is about 3-4 days out form Koumac unless the thespians gain the upper hand.

Madre de Dios! Good question, especially since Zuiho is supposed to be sunk. I blame those crappy German seaplanes you guys use.

What do you plan to do with the indolent Sherwood Forresters who are still debarking? Not to mention poor Boise.

I would favor canceling the unload and sending them back to Darwin post haste. Maybe the cheap Fillipino AK's could stay at Lautem as bomber bait.

The Boise TF could make it back most of the way, the AP's would be more vulnerable.

I can see how the USN Wildcats are recovering at Darwin. Perhaps they can come up to help out.

BTW, I would not be surprised if there is a substantial surface TF about as well.

Insanity embodied, methinks. But that is to be expected when you combine cajuns and Angles. It's just not gonna make sense until you suspend disbelief and grab a fifth of rum.
