With earlier versions in order to keep the peace I would either trade one of my colonies in a disputed system to the AI for some money or tech, or buy or trade for one of the AI's colonies in a disputed system. In the new beta I have noticed over the course of a couple of games that the AI's colonies in disputed systems don't show up for trade in the trade screen, although my colonies are there. I now only have the choice of offering up my own colonies to keep the peace but I cannot attempt to buy or trade for one of the AI's colonies. Is this a bug, or is this intentional, in order to make war more common? Or perhaps I'm the only one this is happening to? It would be a shame in my opinion if this was intentional. The AI's and myself will both settle planets in a system at the same time, and to have the only options for rectifying this be to suffer the heavy diplomacy penalty, go to war or capitulate and give/sell the AI my colony seems rather limiting to me. On the plus side though the AI rarely seems to intentionally settle in a system that I already own. These problems only come up when we both settle at the same time....which in the late expansion phase is a common enough occurrence.

I've had both no trade and trade options with the latest Beta. It appears to take more established colonies off the trade table, or perhaps where one side has an overwhelming number of presences in the system no colonies are up for trade.

Also sometimes in a newly colonised (by both sides) system it can take a little while for the colony to appear as a tradeable item.

Haven't tested this exhaustively so it could also be a random bug that just happened to coincide with the aforementioned criteria for me so far

I am still playing 1.0.3.

There, the mere presence of a colony of yours wan't enough to get trade options on other empire's assets, either.

If you look closely, a disputed system gets a dashed circle drawn around it when the main window view is zoomed out to section level. That circle has the color of only one of the empires involved in that system, and it is probably safe to assume it is that of the empire with the 'strongest' presence according to whichever rules.

I haven't verified this conclusively, but my guess is that I only got trade options for colonies or whatever when I had the strongest presence.

Now, I don't know whether these rules have changed for 1.0.4beta in any way. What has changed, is that other AI empires colonize less in systems with other empires presence, which formerly practically always led to these new colonies constituting a 'weak' presence. So they were immediately available for sale.

I've seen this as far back as 1.03, so it's not new. The AI occasionally decides not to negotiate at all, and this is when you simply take it.

make sure to destroy all their mining stations in your systems, conquer all disputed colonies, and conquer any system of theirs where you have mining stations before even bothering to try peace.

in max difficulty I have used disputes as a tactics... i would colonize in their system and building mining stations so I could sell those for tech (which I desperately needed)... trade those for galaxy maps, trade galaxy maps for more maps and money, use money and tech to build solid defenses (custom designed starports) and solid offense (custom designed troop ships) and conquer some planets...

What I noticed in a recent game was that as soon as the AI built a spaceport in a system where we shared colonies, it started harassing me about wanting my colony.  (I'd colonized first, of course.)  When I checked the trade negotiation list, I could offer my planet, but could not demand theirs.  I had invasion crash issues shortly afterward and decided to take a break for a bit until 1.0.4 final is out rather than frustrate myself so I haven't gotten back in to test that further.  My guess is that having a spaceport in the system is key to whether you have a claim on it or not.

On the other hand, my automated constructors keep building mines in another empire's system.  That other empire then offers me some hefty tech and their galaxy map every time.  That works for me!

I like the part where you can get them to give you all this in exchange for selling them a base that is designed to be a complete and utter albatross around their necks, a nearly completely indestructible base that costs a metric assload of upkeep.

ohhhh... I should design and build a few of those. No weapons on it, just massive shielding... well, maybe a single blaster...

Give it hundreds of blasters. Blasters on a stationary platform without sufficient reactors to power it. Absolutely worthless. Hideously expensive. Tons of armor. Pirates are never gonna kill that thing, but when you want to, you can. Not that you WOULD, because it's intentionally designed as a load. World's most inefficient iron mine.

And then people whine that the game is too easy and we need the economy "rebalanced."

Yep, if you have some house rules the game is much more challenging. I hope people don't do this and then say the game is unbalanced Those kind of things are just gamey and can be done in any game. Online it's known as griefing I think

The space port thing might have something to do with it. I'm continuing with my game tonight, I'll look into that a bit more and see if that's the trigger......I don't think it was a factor in 1.03 though.....
