I've been playing UV now for about two months and recently discovered that the combat results for Japanese Air has dramaticly declined without warning during 8/15/42 forward. My Zeroes and Ocars having not been scoring any kills against P40's, P39's or P400's even though their morale still hovers in the 60's and higher, their fatigue is 30 or below (sometimes in the teens) and many times the odds exceed 20 to 1, how is that possible (or logical for that matter). In addition naval air even with a two to one advantage over the Americans rarely scores any sunk ships in combat. Has anyonelse experienced this, I'd appreciate any constructive comments to correct the problem.

Thanks

There could be many reasons for this. Probably a search on "air combat results", or some similar combination of keywords, will give you a bit more insight into what to expect during campaigns. Even better, one of the "air heads" may reply to your thread with a series of tips.

From my own experience, I have found the weather will often subtly affect air combat results. Poor weather can be present for long periods resulting in less "bloody" intercepts.

If it helps, I have played about half a dozen "long" campaigns from both sides through to mid '43 and I have never encountered any consistent "unexplained" drop off in a/c effectiveness. There will always be occasions where units that performed well yesterday were hopeless the next. The factors influencing air combat are generally mentioned in the rules. If my results were not as expected, I just assume it was due to a different combination of factors.

I would suggest a bit of persistance and if things don't improve then congratulations, you may have uncovered a previously unknown bug (hopefully you've patched to 1.2). Also it may help your cause if you give a detailed example of a combat (ie altitude, weather, exact no's etc) especially if it's accompanied by a cut'n'paste of the actual combat result summary from the game (I think you will find it in document form in the main UV directory). It may encourage the experienced players to comment due to it being a specific example.

Probabily you got a lot of unlucky battles....
I'm playoing a game as the US, I'm in Feb/43 and I took a lot of air losses even if I have an advantage of 2 to 1 everywhere but when I use the P-38....

I am playing a long term Campaign and am in the middle
of Oct 42. The airstrikes by the Jap AI were getting heavier
against PM. My own cap was sending up about the same
number of fighters as the Japs had. I decided to increase
cap level to 90%. The next turn, the Jap airstrike came in
again. This time my fighters (P40s & P39s) against A6M2s and A6M3s were a 2.5 to 1 superiority. I destroyed 30+ Japanese
fighters that turn. Very dramatic results with 1 change. My
cap was set to 70% before that....

Two factors:
1. Late in 42 and 43 Japanese pilot training suffered due to rush to get more planes up. The Japanese pilot training program just wasn't effective for a variety of reasons including limited petroleum supply. They never really recovered from the loss of experienced pilots at Midway.

2. Perhaps more importantly, the P38 and later US fighters were simply vastly superior airplanes compared to the Japanese zeros. These new US fighters appear in later 42 and 43.
