In many games, I find that I am quite good at startegy and tactics against strong opponents. Yet I seldom am good at wiping weak ones. Why?

I give every opponent undue respect. I treat them all as if they were very competent. I defend against they type of attack I WOULD ATTEMPT. I attack with a force prepared for a defense I WOULD SET. Yea, I pretty much don't need to do this. But, I actually never experience much of the disdain for the AI as others have, because I have the ability to "SUSPEND DISBELEIF" quite well

I think about the AI across all the spectrum is the unclear way of setting the difficulty of the game, where there are two separate screens to do this.

There are times where the Military AI seems lacking, then other times it seems good. I pulled one of my larger fleets of Homeworld Patrol duty, and to my surprise the AI actually sent a fleet there. Good thing I had Military Adviser AI on suggest targets, because a pop-up came out telling me about the impending attack.

Erik has mentioned this issue, and hopefully in the future there can more simpler settings, like an actual plain ol "Difficulty Setting", instead of having to adjust every manually added AI's starting colony, etc.

I'd also like to remind those who find the current game not much of a challenge to please try the recommended settings for a more difficult game if you haven't already (these are noted in the latest update change list).

The difficulty settings don't control real difficulty, just how much the game drags. The underlying issue remains that AI behavior is undirected and often like a headless chicken, and apparently, the parts of the AI responsible for separate things don't talk to each other: It seems like you have a diplomatic AI that goes and decides to declare wars on people, without bothering to consult the military AI to see if they are actually able to attack.

<sigh>

And yet, when I play DW I do get attacked by the AI after it declares war on me and at the higher difficulty settings you are also ensuring that the AI has enough resources and aggressiveness to follow through on threats. It has nothing to do with the game dragging on, it can be a fundamentally different game experience on higher difficulty levels.

Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that the AI does, in fact, declare wars it has no apparent ability or intention of following up, as evident in the fact that it will declare a war without even knowing where the enemy is. I'm not clear what the logic of such an act is, since you'd think that, naturally, the best time to declare war is right before you open fire, but eh. I mean, that's what I do...when I can remember to check. "I want to shoot this guy. Are we at war with him? No? Well, then, we are now!"

The thing is, if you post statements that are, in my opinion, over-generalizations of the game's or AI's behavior, then I will contest those. I have however posted many times that there is room for improvement in virtually all areas.

The best way to help us make improvements to anything that is specifically bothering you is to give us specifics and, if possible, save files.

So instead of generalizing, tell me what race/government/galaxy settings you were playing with. Tell me more about the situation where the AI declared war and did not attack. If possible, post a save file right before or after the war declaration so that we can check and see what the AI is thinking.

Score!!

Government 1 - Axis 0 ...

Seriously though, I agree that Fishman often sounds depressed but I detect an individual infatuated with DW's concept.

I suspect that he sounds the way he does because he just can't stand all that potential in the game.

In essence he's probably subconsciously driving the development process into a higher gear.

That's just amateur psychology from yours truly however.

Glad to have you here Fishman

Hey Fishman, you listened Mr Rutins?

If you want to be useful stop crying and give some details on and/or a save file!

Anyway, thank for sharing your experience, be constructive dude! :)

Please let's not make this personal, it's drifting in that direction. The statement I made above is really all that needs to be said regarding some of the criticisms. Everyone is welcome to voice their opinion, but more specifics and save files will help us a lot more in terms of seeing what each player is seeing and figuring out if there is a problem that needs addressing.
