OK, being tired of seeing Escort 003, 005, etc every time I build a new ship, I decided to build a shipnames.txt file for my game. I'm in the middle of the first set of names, which will be the shipNames.txt Royal Navy edition (using actual names of British Royal Navy ships from the Dreadnaught era (turn of the century through WWII). If anyone is interested, I'm more than happy to share.

Currently, I'm in the middle of the destroyer names, and have only done some preliminary tests. I expect this to take me another day or so.

If there is any interest, I can make a shipNames.txt edition for just about any existing navy of the time period (I have resources for the ship names). If there is any interest, I might expand from just the Royal Navy edition.

Anyway, just trying to gage interest and do my part to give back to the community (since I'm not so good at the ship art).

OK, time for a little organizing, I'll put all the releases right here. Just scroll down the thread until you find the ones you want:

Current release:

Imperial Japanese Navy Edition

Previous Releases:

Royal Navy Edition

Not to be outdone but the Imperial Japanese navy can offer the same. Hmmm which forums is this again?

Now, you should know that a JFB like me has plans for an IJN shipnames.txt in the works. That goes without saying.

And the moment you waited for, release of the shipNames.txt Royal Navy edition.

READ THIS BEFORE DOWNLOADING!

Notes:

-Each ship type (with the exception of stations) has between ~50 to ~400 names listed. Lesser used classes, (like Construction ships) get fewer names, while larger used classes (millitary) get more names
-All names are taken from ships that actually existed at some point in the last 200 years. I tried to keep them all British or Commonwealth registered only to stay with the theme (not so easy with the Civilian Types), however that is not always the case.
-When placed in your theme folder, the game will read names from the file over-riding the GE naming system.
-NOTE: If you build more ships than I have provided names for a particular Type (IE Escort or Frigate etc) then you will start a repeat of the list. In Larger games this will most likely happen, but I don't think my arthritic hands could take listing thousands of names for each class.
-NOTE: I believe I have provided enough names for each ship type that in standard or small games you shouldn't see any repeats.

How to Install:

1. Unzip the file into whichever DW>Customization>Theme folder you wish to use it in.
2. Start the game.

I have noted that if you make changes to an existing theme and try to start a game with manual AI empire settings, the game will get into a bug loop, to avoid this do the following:

1. Change back to the default game theme.
2. Start a quick start random game.
3. Quit back to the main menu.
4. Swap to your modified theme and start a game.

This will clear all existing information about the previous game and allow you to set up and start a new game with the modified theme.

DISCLAIMER: You are choosing to download and use this at your own risk and release the creator from any liability for damages that may occur. Even though I have a current McAfee virus-scan installed, you should *ALWAYS* scan any file you download from the internet for viruses yourself.

A copy of this README.txt is included in the zip file.

Currently working on an Imperial Japanese Navy version.

Anyone have feedback on the Royal Navy version? Is anyone even using it? Looking for some motivation here.

In the beginning, I created a list using ship names from a Silent Hunter III mod and typing them directly into the shipnames.txt file. This was very tedious and the wrong way to go about it. I was not using the customization folder. I am now using your Royal Navy version instead and enjoy it very much. I can see you put a lot of time into it. The names in the file should not be listed alphabetical or else that is how that will appear when a ship is created. Yours does mix them up. Thanks for your efforts!

Awesome idea, if I wasnt lazy I'd do it myself :P

But I think adding the appropriate prefix would add to it a bit? like instead of say Enterprise, itd be (in this case) HMS Enterprise

If you want to type out HMS a couple of thousand times, be my guest.

I'm working on an IJN version right now and I think I may have a ship named 'I'm sick of typing out Maru Maru' in there. Every Japanese freighter or pasenger ship is 'something' Maru. Maru meaning circle for those that don't know.

New edition, The Imperial Japanese Navy Edition

FAQ:

-with the IJN being much smaller than the Royal Navy, this shipnames.txt list is really only good for small to standard size games. Larger games will see repeats.
-due to the small number of actual IJN warships, I had to embellish this list. I did stay within standard IJN naming comventions though (explained farther down).
-the IJN merchant marine was huge to say the least, I was able to use the actual names of freighters with names to spare.
-Many of the ship names in this file are very, very similar, and some could be repeats, if you find any please report them in this thread with the two classes that have ships of the same name so I can fix and update the file as necessary.

IJN Naming conventions were as follows:

-Second Line Destroyers and small combattants tended to carry the names of trees and plants.
-First Line Destroyers tended to carry Celestial, Weather & Nature Related names.
-Light Cruisers were named after rivers
-Heavy Cruisers were named after mountians
-Battle cruisers (this class did not exist until after WWII for classification purposes) were treated as cruisers and named after mountains.
-Battleships were named after historical (pre-Tokugawa) provinces
-Aircraft carriers carried the names of mystical birds or dragons (Caveat: ships converted from other classes carried their original name IE Ibuki, and toward the end of the war, the naming system seems to have fallen to the wayside with carriers Referense: Katsuragi (Katsura Castle)).

Knowing this, the names I embellished to fill up the rosters stuck with that convention (cruisers and capital ships to be exact). That is I took cruiser names from rivers and mountains, and capital ship names from Provinces and mystical flying creatures.

ENJOY!

Yeah, you notice I have not yet committed to any other versions. And granted, the Japanese ships all have very similar sounding names, but I bet native speakers wouldn't have that problem. I think that is part of the reason I have so many duplicates...it was hard for me to tell if I'd used the name before or not.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll make the adjustments and put up an updated version within the next day or two. Not only did my poor wrists threaten to detach themselves and leave me, my poor eyes went on strike too. I'll get this fixed up and reissued.

It is kind of funny though because a lot of Japenese freighters will say something like
Kobayashi Maru number 5... so it is kind of like what see here in this game.

Would be kind of cool to have ship names for your fleet, and a different set of names for the opposing fleets.

Not just the freighters, the Minesweepers, Submarine Chasers and PGs (Patrol Gunboats) almost all had simple pendant numbers rather than names. Minesweepers tended to be W or Wa series (IE W-101), the subchasers and patrol ships would carry numbers such as CH-101. Basically the names were simply abbreviations for Minesweeper 101 or Patrol Ship 101, etc.

OK, up next is probably a French Navy Edition. With the new comp and ability to play huge games, my interest has spiked up again.

You can't as of right now, the list only works for the player race.

Bump for Legends and new members

Note that these have not yet been updated with carrier names, but I will probably get that done this evening (since I need to do it for my own use anyway).

This is a great list! As I like to play in a Honorverse-like setting which resembles Nelson's navy in some ways, these ship names are a great fit.

My only trouble is that I like to put 'HMS' in front of all my ship names (I'm a stickler for formality ), but that means that the name re-pops up all the time. So if I change for example 'Apollo' into 'HMS Apollo', the next ship I build will be once again 'Apollo'. Is it possible to put 'HMS' in front of every ship's name? There must be a quick way to do this as it's a text file, but I really have no idea how to do this or where to start.

Is there any way one of you fine gentleman can help me out?

Best,
Adrastos

It would be possible, but I'm not going to, as it was a lot of work to edit this list in the first place.

However, if you wanted to do so, you simply need to use notepad to make your own ship names list.

When you do you'll see why I don't want to redo mine. When I did the IJN version I was so sick of typing in X Maru for every single freighter it wasn't funny.

For those wondering, I am currently slowly making my way through a Marine nationale (French Navy) version of the ship list. Just remember, it will get done when it gets done.
