Great review, Martin. Sounds like a good one, but WitP is a harsh mistress who will not allow me time for any other game.

I've started an AAR vs the AI as the Western Powers over on the WW1 forum. So you can all see my spectacular fall from grace I'm only two months in and it looks like the French are collapsing already...

The French resistance largely collapsing within a few miles of their capital city just a few months into the war? Jeesh...how unrealistic.

Obviously the fanbois at work.

Looking forward to picking this up, probably for the weekend. Or maybe I'll come to my senses and realize that I have far too many unplayed games sitting on my hard drive and far too little free time and energy to play them. It's a toss-up...

And few others things also. Not interesting for threadster brothers.

Pretty much Russian infantry corps are generally weaker than their German (or French/British) counterparts. I've not played much with the Russians but it looks like a disaster in the making. Forced attacks in August 1914 against German cities with weak infantry is not a recipe for success...
Add in the partial mobilisation at start meaning railways aren't usable for transport troops like they are for the other powers and gather the army into any sort of shape is a pain. And as for Rasputin

That sounds about right. Are there individual officer stats in this one and can individual units gain/lose experience?

Finished watching The Pacific last night. I was very impressed by the first half of the series. But I feel that they rushed through the last 4 episodes without really doing their subjects justice. Overall, however, I think it was very well made and historically accurate (I would argue more so than Band of Brothers).

Individual officers have values for rank (A-Z), co-ordination (important during army by army activation), pursuit (# of corps that can expoit a breakthrough), sacking (how easy it is to get rid of them), obstination (how many rounds you're forced to fight before you can retreat) and attack and defence bonuses. There are also other bonus 'abilities' that they can have. The Russian general Rennekampf is easier to sack because he loyalty is suspect. Others can't be sacked as they're part of the royal family of their nation. Some get bonuses to gas usage or tanks.

Units don't gain exp, but at the rate I've been taking casualties that's not a surprise Destroyed corps aren't always destroyed, it's used to describe a unit which has become so badly hit that it's removed from the front line. They usually get put back into the front the month after as reinforcements at half strength.

The Russians start the game in pretty poor shape really. No railway usage for the initial turns and they suffer penalties to mutinies, strikes and industrial rolls. The possible Russian coups can remove some of those penalties or have other effects.

'Red' coup (CP advantage): Lenin takes power and will sue for peace.
'White' coup (Entente advantage): Kornilov takes power. Civil production is decreased and military dictatorship carries on fighting.
'Blue' coup (Entente advantage): Kerenski takes power, gives advantages to social rolls (strikes etc) and a bonus to Russian Grand Offensives.
