Could someone please explain what happened in this episode? More precisely I would like to know:

1. What was the German MG-42 shooting at in the night?

2. Why were the Germans sleeping/laying on the ground? I mean, they (the Germans) knew that the enemy was close (having fought with the in the night) and that the enemy new that they were there. So that just decided to take a nap and not post any guards. WTF??

3. Why did the second German company run right in front of the americans, so they could get shot?

Is there any information on the fight? I assume that the fight in "Crossroads" really did take place, so I would like to know the historical facts.

FWIW: I love BoB. I think it's among the best tv-series I have ever seen, and one of the most realistic series/movie when it comes to WW2.

I too thought that episode was a little strange, but I did read the book a few months ago and I distinctly remember a chapter about this battle. I think the Germans thought they were being attacked by a much larger force. After all, so few men certainly wouldn't attack such a large force of men. The Americans were just as surprised about the result of the battle as the Germans (only 1 or two casualties on the part of the Americans IIRC). They thought they were attacking a much smaller force of germans and wouldn't have done it if they really knew how many men were there.

Q1: The MG42 was shooting at the American lines.

Q2: The Easy Company squad(s) flanked the Germans and had spent the night in the field to the side. The Germans thought that they were safe because the MG42 was looking at the American lines.

Q3: With all the firefight going on, the German's were running to what they thought was the front. That is why they ran right in front of the Americans.

That's my recollection of what I read anyway.
