I've seen this mentioned about setting objectives for units, use of orders, etc. All I usually do is move units of my men towards where I think they should be going (tactical features, objectives, VLs etc)

Is this the best way to do it?

I think objectives only matters if you play with C&C on.
Then it is indeed important to set objectives for each unit during the deployment phase. That way you need to figure out beforehand what units you need to each location. (VH's etc.) You will get penalty for moving units in another direction that that of the objective. If it's an meeting/advance/assault engagement, you can always set all units' objective to the enemy's far edge. That way moving forwards will always be towards the objective. :cool:
