I think it would be great if positioning your units during battles required more tactical thought. As it is it doesn't matter which box you put your units in (not the front line obviously) during the battle. I'd think it would add alot to the game if you had to prepare in advance where to deploy your units. Maybe ones in the deployment area could be use after the first turn and the ones in the rear could only be used on the say fourth turn of battle onwards to take into account of trying to get your units up to the front line during a battle as I'm sure most of us know getting troops forward during a battle in WW1 was near impossible most of the time.

Another area that could do with expanding a little is the air war. I'd think as each unit is a squadron we could track individual planes maybe?

Just a thought.

Most of what you ask for is already in. :) But it gets much more obvious in major battles (where both halves of the battle screen is used)

You see, you can only move units freely from the deployment area to the rear (or battle line) during the start of the battle. Then such move goes INSTEAD of a move from the reserve.

And moving out of the reserve is dependant on a number of things, distance of the HQ and such.

I think it would still be good if once you set up your troops you couldn't bring men from the rear upto deployment until say the third combat round. Then on the fourth round they could go to the front line.

At the moment you really dont have to put much thought into where you place your units at the start of the battle. The only one is who to put in the frontline first and I expect you want the best or maybe second best unit to hit them first...or if defending your best unit in the front line.

I have played one big battle. I won and really didn't have to put much thought into it. Haven't played a grand offensive yet and I can see thats where the real grit is.

The trick is overwhelming 1 of their armies with 2 or more of yours or, at the least, attacking multiple detachments of their same army at the same time. Draw off their reserves to a low priority battle and make sure he's spent (and you're not) when it comes to the important one. Managing (and making opponent mis-manage) the reserves is a big part of it. I just wish I could 'minimize' the battle screen to take a look at the map and what other units & battles are happening that same turn nearby.

While the battle screen doesn't often take a truckload of thought, it's still more than many games where you just watch it all automated and see the results at the end.

Oh I agree its a great game...no doubt about it....no harm in thinking of little updates that would add to the game.
