uploaded as taltamir 1.0.4.9 2010-05-20 GxEm crash.7z (including higher res screenshot)

On a new game on a clean install of 1.0.3 then 1.0.4.9 with mods: Star trek mod: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2432785&mpage=2&key= Racial Troop Icons: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2443210&mpage=2&key= v0.15 planets/landscape mod: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2436283 Galaxy background mod, using the 5000x5000 resolution picture: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2414803

Also, I noticed that when I conquer an alien species and gain their ships, the ships do not provide me visibility of the systems they are at right away.

Don't you seen the other one that happened to me?

Crashed because i've acessed the "Colonies Screen"! All these patches are almost useless because the real bugs are that ónes plague our games.

The screen says

Error code SDFWQOQQOQELSD
  • SYSTEM OUT OF MEMORY ERROR: OUT OF MEMORY.
I kinda wanna troll you here but, I understand you may not be as computer savvy so ill help you out with this one (Ive come to assume a greater knowledge of computing since I work as a network engineer and I am surrounded by some fun geeks all day)

Basically you have 3 main parts of a computer

CPU <- adds and subtracts and checks for equivalency (can also divide and multiply and even output results in massive specificity like 7/3=1.7320508075688772935274463415059 at a large cost) this object can does work on things it is the part that makes computing computing instead of just storing lots of 1s and 0s on a disk or chip with no purpose. This is ok to overload as much as you want, things just slow down if its not able to finish in time. THIS IS THE COMPUTERS ENGINE, ITS PURPOSE IS POWER TO MOVE THE CAR MAKING IT DRIVE BUT SITTING ALONE IT CANT DRIVE ANYTHING CUZ THERES NO CAR AT ALL ITS JUST SITTING

RAM/Memory <- stores all information that the computer is running, changing, editing, displaying. This memory is insanely fast think 1 second to read or write 3 FULL DVDs to/from it. When you run out of this some things can be written to a file on the third thing called a Paging/Page File. keyword some, but only if the thing being stored there is completely on pause, not displayed, and doesnt need to do anything at all and will not untill you or your system prompts ahead of time that it will need to be used soonish. THESE ARE THINGS THAT THE COMPUTER USES TO DO DRIVE, WHEELS, TIRES, SUSPENSION, TRANSMISSION. the computer doesnt do its task if it has nothing attached to it, this is all the things attached to the engine to comprise the car and allow it to do driving things. ***This has a total size as if your car said my total size is 4000 pounds and when on and empty i weigh 2700 pounds, so you can put spinners and wings and stickers subwoofers on/in your car thereby allowing it to have extra functions other than drive. when you put enough in your car to where it totals 4000 pounds you can start tdragging them behind the car(PAGING FILE) turning them completely unusable fat for the time being and making the car very slow. when you can no longer dangle any more out the back imagine that the car immediately stops and falls apart into a pile of parts , that would represent the third thing.

Hard drive <- stores all information on your computer that is saved (the kind above is blank, deleted, completely gone, when the power leaves the memory) this is where files, programs, and windows is kept for next time you need to start those things up, then it loads those things into ram when they are started so they can be used by the CPU to do things like computing or alternatively computing can be done with them. this is VERY VERY SLOW in comparison think 1 DVD in a two whole minutes if you have a beast of a hard drive. A program CANNOT operate in any way or at any acceptable speed when being paged here, your computer will appear to be broken if it must run a program from paging. IMAGINE YOUR CAR BECOMES A PILE OF PARTS WHEN YOU STOP USING IT, this is your hard drive.

due to the final statement there, most games will inform you that they have crashed if you dangle too many of the other things your computer has out the back tied on with a rope and start flying out of the windows and dissapearing (this would restart the computer because the car doesnt understand what happened and must collect it from the side of the road before continuing) this will cause the pile of parts to attempt to go back into car form once you get back onto the pile and start teh rebuilding process to drive (just use your imagination here this is starting the computer)

So as you see here modern computers since they dont want things flying out of the moving vehicle since that would make it fall into a pile of parts on the hard drive and have to restart, we have a feature that says HEY GET OUT YOUR GETTING BIGGER AND ITS FORCING things OUT THE CAR!!! so here your computer has told it that it will no longer associate with it and gets left on the side of the road (this is your error here)

All summed up this game it eats it gets bigger, it uses a lot of motor to get moving and it takes up a lot of room endangering more important objects to be pushed out of the memory, and the computer doesnt like this because it really likes its tires and other things like that which are deemed neccessary and would need to be retrieved and not lost before continuing.

I now apologize to the world for offending you, but you all now know a lot about how computers and their parts work. And if you want to delete this, translate this or rewrite completely this information because he needs to know this stuff. *Education is not always something you want (people skip school all the time, but its neccessary even if you are easy to offend and you want to delete this)*

partial solution, (turn down galaxy size) OR (do this by closing programs but dont close the live ones (important programs that offer good stuff liek sound) or (system processes) or anything else becuase your computer needs those to work properly)

***COMPLETE SOLUTION*** upgrade your total storage capacity (DONT RUN STUFF YOU DONT NEED STILL CUZ IT SLOWS DOWN THE TRUCK)
  • do this buy buying more ram

This is a family friendly forum and that was not a family friendly analogy at all. You could easily have explained all that in a way that didn't require me to waste my time editing it. I've edited your posts, please keep it clean in the future, consider that a warning.

I did not notice that. I know what memory is. Before noticing it guessed the super high resolution texture mods was involved. I have removed them all (only kept the star trek mod) and I no longer run out of memory. The fact it actually says out of memory confirms it. that being said, it should use the page file rather then crash...

PS. "the buy more ram" is not going to help because a single 32bit executable is limited to 2GB, I have 8GB of ram on a 64bit machine, but distant worlds is 32bit meaning it can only use a maximum of 2GB out of it.

I also run those high res mods. Game crashes before too long with the same error. Sigh, it might help if I give some specs, no?

Intel C2D@1.8Ghz 2GB DDR2 Intel GMA 950, lol, I know. Been able to run DW with those mods perfectly until this latest patch.

I'm also having issues with mods causing crashes still with 1.0.4.9. http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2472713 Removing the music from my mod seemed to make it better but in fact just makes it delay the crash for a longer while. Without mods (by mods I mean custom stuff in a theme) the game never seems to crash so far.

Hopefully this can be fleshed out before they widen the mod availability of DW. Make sure you all try to document and upload the save game to help.

lordxorn, this particular issue can be improved if there are issues with the way the game code is written, but Im fairly confident that there will not be a significant amount of memory trash collecting that can be done on top of whats already in the code. games that do this incorrectly crash after they have been running for a while and by checking your memory usage (alt + ctrl + del) you can see how much is being used. this game seems to use a stable amount of memory and not one that keeps growing and growing.

If you really take a look at all the things that this game does and all the things it keeps track of theres a lot, think about it every unit that every race and every spacemonster all are controlled by the computer, all of their stats and images are all stored in the memory.) It is just a problem with computing and hardware in general, this game was extremely well coded. But from what I am noticing, I believe the whole thing is coded in .NET (there are more than one .net language to write in but they all make identical semi-compiled end files once compiled) this means that a lot of trash collection is done by the computer automatically. .NET is a slightly slower environment than C/C++ which has been the game coding language for the last 20 years, but the amount of work and debugging required to make an impressive application is a grain of rice compared to a Iron Statue in c/c++s case. If my understanding of .NET languages is correct the programmer doesnt handle trash collection at all, so there probably is not much that can be improved upon except chosing smaller variable types that have been mistakenly set too large (can help some but your probably just gonna have to live with it)

This game asks your computer to perform tasks that 10 years ago would have been substantial for super computers to perform well at. We are in luck because currently home computers are moving towards being the same thing as super computers. We have multiple processors in almost all of our computers and the massive super computers pretty much ALL use desktop/desktop-based processors only in larger numbers.

Very very soon we will be using 48 core computers and this type of massive simulation will be easier on the computer and will be much more in depth than this game is here. AMD and Intel now have 6 core home computer processors, and for a thousand bucks you can get a Magny Cours AMD processor with 12 cores and 4 buses (1 to go to the mother board and memory, and 1 to go to each of up to 3 other magny cours processors) and there are motherboards capable of Quad SLI and 4 x 12 core processors.

2 years from now we will all be using 16 core computers and RAM sizes and production will have to ramp up heavily to keep up with the tasks we use our computers for.

But right now we need to buy more ram, since the sizes of our operating system and applications are too large for our current setups.

To run 1000 or 1400 stars, you NEED 4GB of ram.

This will fix the 2GB 32 bit WOW64 issue. ************************************************************************************ http://bilbroblog.com/wow64/hidden-secrets-of-w0w64-ndash-large-address-space/ ************************************************************************************

to do this yourself you need 3 files, editbin.exe, mspdb71.dll and link.exe all from microsoft visual studio (try looking for them in visual studio express edition .NET that program is the free version and it should have them)

Matrix Games, please set the LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag on your distantworlds.exe file. (i think you can set it in the linker also to do during compile) type this into command line after right clicking inside the folder that your program is inside (you need visual studio to have editbin) so this will probably have to be done by matrix games unless you have visual studio. editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE distantworlds.exe

IIRC, LAA is discouraged with .NET applications, at least you cannot set it in Visual Studio.

I wonder why devs do this, make games that are so big and complex, if you max out everything, they are too big to run properly.  Armada 2526 was the same way, I seem to remember from the forums.

Put another way, if the max size galaxy was 700 stars, would anyone really say, 'I was gonna buy this, but it only has 700 stars.  If it had 1400 stars though, I'd be all over it'?

Of course, I play on 100 and 250 maps.  Haven't had a hard lock or game related crash yet.

distant worlds running 4 days straight without shutoff 1400 stars still 820MB used

no memory issues with this game whatsoever.

also no crashing whatsoever, this redeems the .NET language in my view. Doing this in C++ without a single issue or crash would be kinda rare. (usually only simple programs end up this stable in c++)

Id actively encourage it unless problems are found while doing so. He is using that statement to cover his rear in case some banks account management software is switched to LAA when its code isn't compliant with future tendencies to expand. my reccomendation to anyone who can find a way is to trick it into making a 8000 star system and see when it crashes then lower it to however many it can handle at 3.40282367GB -10% then play it till crash or otherwise determine that a crash will not occur.

By the way the forum seems to have an issue, I cannot select wingdings as my font.
