Ok I had a comp melt down a few weeks ago but I got most of that fixed.
But a new problem tht I cant cant fix has came up.

Upon booting win 98 my comp freezes.

I think ive pinpointed the problem down to me installing new mouse drivers.

I run a step by step start up where it asks yes and no on each startup item.

When it comes to my dfs.vxd file thats where it freezes.
Whether or not thats the problem file or not I dont know but that the best I can do.

Im running
win 98 second edition
PIII 500
320 mb ram
geforce 2 mx 100/200 32mb video card
creative sound blaster audigy sound card
intel mother board (sorry dont know model number)
microsoft infared intellimouse explorer.

Any help would would be nice.

This is a virtual driver for the Distributed File System that is installed with Microsoft networking components. If you look in the Network control panel, you probably have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed. I would remove it and then reboot the computer and then reinstall it if you really need it. If you are on a dial up connection to the internet, you don't really need that networking client.

To shed a bit more light on the problem...

I can run msconfig and disable my system.ini files and get my comp to start normally so I know the problem lies in that some of those files arnt booting properly.

What parts of the system.ini are you unchecking from loading at startup that allows you boot up?

all of it will boot it up correctly but of course this disables most of my drivers so its unapceptable to use.

I can disable something called 386nh folder and it appears to boot properly with no freezing....but itll almost make to to my password screen and will reboot my system each and every time automaticly....

the folder appears to be full of virtual device drivers.

Some of the extensions are:
.vpd
.vxd
.vcd
.vmd

and some other assorted ones.

You must have the 386en section of the system.ini enabled to boot up. This section also loads up the mouse driver. My suggestion is if immediately after installing the mouse drivers and upon reboot the machine started messing up, then I would remove the mouse driver. I would hook up a ps/2 mouse and boot the computer into safe mode and then uninstall the intellimouse driver. Then see if the computer can boot up in normal mode.

If you are referring to installing and freezing..remember..win98 will not install with an USB device. Get a PS/2 adapter and install from there. Take out the sound card and build just from the video card. Sound card should not be in the slot next to the AGP. Also if you are going to SE, build the OS for 98 first....driver, updates, and dx 8.0 or better then install SE.
