Lars does the game have an AI?

Bo

No AI, but it can be played PBEM although with no cheat protection. Solitaire works fine.

Lars

Is PBEM feature true? The ADG site does not mention this (it only refers to solitare or hotseat), if so it might be worth picking up.

To use CWiF for PBEM you would send the game file to the other player, he performs his impulse and then sends it back to you. To make it work you have to depend on the other player to do reasonable intercepts in your behalf or via instructions you sent in a text file with the game file.

It is not a formal PBEM system.

Better take Vassal for PBEM now. I think it's the best alternative until MWiF is released.

Once MWiF is out it will definitely be the better program. However many people may not realize Vassal requires ownership of the boxed edition. Which can be quite expensive with all the ...in Flames modules. My wife jokingly refers to the boxed WiF system as "Dollars in Flames".

CWiF also does some of the rule checking (although not always very well) for you, like supply, weather effects, making sure you don't exceed your activity limits, counting up oil properly, that sort of thing.

Hi abj its the new me, just bought cwif from adg [15$ us] and I am enjoying it, no AI but I dont think you need one, I know I say that now but when you [me] make stupid uneducated comments like I have made you have to eat crow which I am now doing. It does not let you make errors, but you do have to have a knowledge of the rules [which I dont have] especially about sea boxes I am sure that Steve's version with new graphics, tutorials and such will overpower this one but it is still a good teaching version of this game, I am truly enjoying this version and am looking forward to Steve's version which I do hope will be completed in the near reasonable future [not a pun and no negativity intended]

Bad example, civ 1-4 were all released. Cwif was not, from an end user point of view ( in my business the only one that really matters) a computer version of the game has been in development for over 10 years. That is all that matters, completely accurate or not.

I heartily disagree, you can goto ADG's website and buy CWiF right now if you wanted too. However I will agree it is not feature rich and did not meet the original expectations. However ADG must feel it is finished otherwise why is it for sale? Therefore it proves my point that this is not the same game 10 years in development. It is an overhaul of an older game that never met customer expectations. That in and of itself shows the rewrite needed. So it has been 10 years since ADG first attempted to do this project, and this is round two.

I have been under the opinion that no one involved believed it was 'ready' for release but since it is as finished as it will ever be and people wanted to buy it 'as is', that it was released.

My understanding is that it is simply the last beta version that was ever released.

If people want to buy something that is incomplete in some fashion, are advised of the current state of the product, and people are willing to pay for it, why not sell it to them.

In this set of circumstances, 'finished' is not a cut and dried term.

I am glad that you are enjoying it.

One other thing...

When I was learning the game (about 20 years ago), I found myself going step by step with the rules every time a naval action occurred for quite some time. Don't feel that you are alone when it comes to grasping these rules slowly.

Bo, I am glad you are enjoying the game. I believe the sceenshots of MWiF show some of the graphical differences. You will find CWiF has some issues and therefore part of the reason for a rewrite. But overall it will definitly help with learning the game and rules.

After reading most of this thread I would like to say that I'm glad Matrix Games and Steve have taken this task on.  Hopefully we will see a finished product soon.  I've been a fan of WiF since it release a lifetime ago and know many folks who would fork over the cash to get a working version for the PC.

Welcome to the forum.

If you have comments on any aspect of the game, please post them. I read everything and while I might not immediately make changes in response to suggestions, I have made hundreds of changes based on feedback in forum posts. Fairly often, I let something 'simmer' for days, weeks, or even months, and then find a way to accommodate the request without too much effort.

Perhaps the best example of this was the question of how to indiciate which coastal hexes can be invaded. Originally we were looking for a graphical change to the map, so invadable hexes could be readily distinguished from non-invadable hexes. But the hex graphics are very detailed already. Michale came up with the idea of simply added text to the description of the "adjacent sea areas" of the main form. That text box updates as you scroll the cursor over hexes, so it is omnipresent. One of the several text boxes that describe each hex (e.g., who owns it, terrain, weather, etc.) is exclusively for listing the adjacent sea areas. By adding ("Invadable') following the name of each adjacent sea area, we solved the original problem with complete clarity, minimal coding, and without adding more complexity to the hex graphics. By the way, the time between the original post of the problem and Michael's solution was a couple of years.

I dougt it is, and I question that the add is accurate in writing : "publisher: Matrix Games/Slitherine".
As much as I can tell, Slitherine have nothing to do with MWiF.

Ah OK, so Matrix & Slitherine merged. I read it in the add that Slitherine was doing something around MWiF, I did not understood that Matrix had became Matrix Games/Slitherine.
Thanks !

The announced date is news to me. Other than that I have nothing to add at this time about a release date.

===

I did know that Matrix was merging with Slitherine; David Heath had given me a call to discuss that prior to the merger.

The merger has affected nothing interms of MWIF's development or release. At its most fundamental level, all the MWIF contracts are unchanged.

My two cents.

At the bottom of their story is a source listed as Matrix Games.

source: "http://www.matrixgames.com/games/story.asp?gid=296"

This link goes to a 404 error which translates in layman's terms as the page does not exist. I'd take the story with a grain of salt.

I'm sure we can pick this apart all day long but I'll stay hopeful for now

Most likely causes:
  • The directory or file specified does not exist on the Web server.
  • The URL contains a typographical error.
  • A custom filter or module, such as URLScan, restricts access to the file.

It could be a 'polling' style site that possibly harvested this launch date info from an old post either in these forums or other, and put it in its "scheduled release date" database as its last known release date for the title.

When it picked up the Maitrix-Slitherine merger news, it probably "updated" its info and generated (or regenerated) a story line on MWIF with their last known release date.

Publicity on a game in development is usually a good thing. If there are those who know the game, or want to know more about the game, then they just may come here to find out about it, and that can be a good thing.

Thank you MajorDude,

I guess I'm hoping somebody knows something and isn't talking yet. It's been forever since a release date was announced.  Maybe Steve  can shed some light on this in his June update.
