I like MoO3 and Space Empire V, but wasnt sure if i will like this. Havent found a demo to check it out yet (if there is any). Can someone tell me the different than MoO3 and Space Empire V than this? As long it bigger and better i would give it a shot. Just tired of wasting money on crappy strategy games that arent worth playing it.

Noticed the screenshots, the space battle or around the planet doesnt look like 3D. Its all 2D environments?

Hi RisingSun,

You may want to have a look through the reviews here as well:

It is very different to your standard 4X game and is more like EuropaUniversalis3 with the marco grand strategic real time gameplay and you are not micromanaging research, planet building or complex tactical battles like in SEV.

If you liked the MoO series and Space Empires, chances are you will enjoy this one. In my humble opinion this is as close to the PERFECT 4X game anyone has ever achieved. Of course that could just be me, but I get the feeling that is not necessarily the case by reading these forums.

The fact that the game is being improved upon only adds to that assessment.

Codeforce has set the bar for space 4X games IMHO.

I loved the Moo Series and I like this game very much. I say you will like this game because of what you have mentioned but please answer these questions. Do you like Europa Universallis series? Do you like Hearts of Iron Series? NOw when playing these games did you ever wunder what it would be like if MOO did this or a 4X space game done like this? If you answered yes then get this game. If you don't like EU or HoI then you might not like this game.

It is real time but like EU and HoI you can pause when ever you want and change the game speed. There is a huge learning curve to this game, some of the things are not well documented. I suggest going to the AAR and read the "how to design a ship" and that part will be easier then.

There are a few things I don't like about this game, but it's one of my favorite 4X space games now.

Yes there is alot of bugs in here, but I found this game very playable from 1.0 but CodeForce the makers of the game, (Elliot) and Matrix (Eric) are very supportive of this game through the forums so if you have any problems we and they are here to help. I Have never seen so many patche released so early so people can have this game be played. CodeForce and Matrix listen to us and have implimented things within 2 weeks of release, so they do listen to what we suggest. They don't do everything but listen and hopefully will be taken into consideration for an expansion. ( OH PLEASE make an expansion I just can't wait) Some few people are very vocal on how unplayable this game is, but most of us do not agree with them. Everyone has an opnion just like they don't agree how great this game is. Just letting you know that.

From what I little information I read from you, I say get the game. Read the reviews, read the posts here. If you like MOO and like HoI and or EU then get this game. It would be a must then. But if you didn't like EU or HoI, then why didn't you like it so we can see if DW is for you then.

Too me DW is abit like MOO, GCII, Space Empires all into one. Everything is in 2D, 3d is not really needed. There is alot of good eye candy in the game as well.

Please ask questions, we are here to help, for either get the game or not. But I say it's a must buy for a fan of 4X space games. Yes it's not perfect, but it's a dimond in the rough.

I moved over to this game from Gal Civ 2 and I think DW is better than GC2, not in every way, but overall I prefer it.  I just hope they keep working on it and one thing that is especially important to me is opening up modding more so that we can add new races and shipsets rather than just editing the currently available ones, especially the shipsets... hinthint <---look here Erik

It is a very good game and well worth the $40 for digital download,$50 for digital plus physical copy. This is a great gem of a game that has a dedicated developer behind it making tweaks and improvements at a pace nobody can complain about.Comparisons to SE5 I find almost laughable and I am an SE5 fan.......DW was playable and enjoyable at release,i needed Kwork's Balance Mod to make SE5 enjoyable for me.

In terms of modding abilities that the powers that be have said is coming and will be addressed. So its in the pipeline,I'm not certain when but its coming.

As regards 3D,well Dw isn't 3D so if that is a ironclad requirement than pass this game by.Just be warned if you pass on this game you are cheating yourself of a real 4x space grand strategy classics debut.

The only thing we can hope is that DW is going to be a serie of excellent future games :).

Well im not much into Europa Universallis series, Heart of Irons was good except part III (totally messed up). Hmm after reading your comments, think i wait til demo comes out first. I threw away alot, alot of games and alot of money was lost as well.

GC2 is good game, just not big enough. Wish i could play GC2 on the whole galaxy, but that may require on hellva pc to run it. I didnt like the space combat, look cheap and unrealistic. Last month i was playing Star Trek Online, and though it was cool, but the space battle and physic in space wasnt right, bouncing off ships and big rocks instead of BOOM! lol. Well I was hoping there will be next MoO Series, so i havent found any that im happy with yet. I do want everything as possible to make it realistic as possible.

I can't bear those Paradox games (downloaded a demo, fired it up, went through the tutorial, had no idea what to do, uninstalled) but I like DW.

I really can't compare DW to any other game really.  It's in a class by itself.  Now, that may be a good class or a bad class depending on your point of view.

True every softwares have it class and different from others, some will have disadvanage or alittle better than other, but not perfect. Im going to wait awhile and see what happen. I checked youtube for player's comments, most of them are disappointed with that game, part of it is really silly or stupid (space combat). It still doesnt look right, all that is pointing in different direction but not elvation in 3D. If they going to make it 2D, they should have made it look realistic but smaller or bigger, bigger you wont be able to see ships on the other side. You will need 3D views to pan around see what going on. You cant overlapp ships like that or get too close.

Hmm, I am very happy with the combat in Distant Worlds. It has great Diplomacy, Espionage, Tech. Economy is one of the greatest features. I am also very happy with map size, 700 star systems with 20 players and Independent colonies and Pirates on the average map settings really rocks. SEV-esque ship design and a very smart escort AI round out the list.

LOL, I meant 20 Empires ( at least size 700 map), which is the most that you can start with, not counting Independents that achieve Empire status. If you want a very full galaxy, then I suggest going with the highest Independent colony setting (teeming?) and enable the setting that lets them create empires. I like variety.

I hope that Erik expands the max player setting in the future, and allows for smaller maps with more players. Right now it looks like you need about 25 stars per player minimum, and yet there is no 500 star Galaxy. In the vein of older space 4x's I like smaller maps, so it would be nice if you could set the minimum stars a bit lower, like 15 stars minimum per player.

Actually, due to a low power PC, I'm playing with only 8 empires atm, so I've grouped like alien types together to make a sort of 'Star League' for each family type. Nice thing about this game, you can start one, then hit the editor to make it a bit more interesting.

Of course, Monday my problems with large games should be solved...have a new computer on the way with Intel i7 core and 12 GB of RAM. That *should* be able to handle any DW scenario I throw at it. What I can tell you right now is that a 2.0 Ghz celeron and only 2 GB of RAM is rather limiting on the DW gameplay scene. Games just get to big for my current computer to handle it, and it really limits how you can play the game.

I will have to try a smaller Galaxy soon, I've jumped straight in at the deep end, I like the long, slow, epic game, but I think maybe 7 opponents on a smallish galaxy perhaps with the Young setting instead of Starting would make for a really interesting game.

Yeah, thats well above what I use and I'm not getting any problems at all on 1400 stars with 20 Empires

Master of Orion only had 8 players (i think? ). Not every game has to be epic to be fun.

Congrats on the new computer man. You should be screaming along soon, especially when the new update goes live since it has 64 bit support

Well...there just comes a time when the old crank starter Model T won't cut it anymore. I've put this off a long time (mostly because I LOATHE Vista, good thing the new rig is Windows 7), but figure I'm going to have to sooner or later, might as well make it sooner and in a big way. I'm hoping I won't have to upgrade again fro a long time.

Well, with 12 gigs of RAM and a nice processor you shouldntneed to upgrade anytime soon. Especially since you seem like a big wargamer, and while most wargames need plenty of processing power, they dont need the newest video cards like most FPS games do.

Yeah I hate Vista, too. I jumped from XP to Windows 7, and I am in love. Fast, stable, and slick. Just make sure you use either Firefox or Google Chrome for your browser, IE is getting super clunky and slow.

Soon you will be wowing us with your 20 player, 1400 planet, teeming independent power games as well, lol.
