I must say I was very disappointed in the game - it is a definite backslide making Spartan the peak of the series. The only improvement was diplomacy. There is no way to sell excess goods, no economics, only "mining" (not different minerals), one can not see what the shortest route should be (cannot tell the troops to move to a final spot), and the greatest improvement of Spartan, victory conditions for the smaller powers, is gone. The screens in the older two games had all the information available at a glance - it appears Slitherine went for the "wow" factor rather then usefulness with one now needing to click multiple times just to see what can and cannot be built. Builds now happen in the spring rather then based on a logical number of months. What were they thinking????

Actually Lordhoff Legion was the first slitherine release, then Chariots, Spartan and Troy the last. I agree Spartan and Gates of Troy are much improved over Legion.

Well, then, that makes a lot more sense.  Seems it was re-released after Chariots and Spartan by MATRIX so I thought it was newer.  It had a more modern feel to it too in that graphics seemed to be a higher priority then function (which often looks bland and busy).  So the newer games did go backwards IMO in diplomacy - Chariots and Spartan may as well not have had diplomacy as it had no major impact.  I haven't bought "Troy" - seemed too much like Spartan in concept except in an earlier time frame.  If I had known that LG was first (well at least "Legion" - not sure what they did to call it Gold), I would have played "Legion Gold" first - I probably would have enjoyed it without comparing it to the others.  As it is, I got bored after just a few days and unloaded it.  Oh well, such is life
