I think I can top that:

I have a starting tech presented for research.

In this particular case I am playing the Quameno who start  out with the NovaCore NX-700 engine. This tech is usually at the end of the Engines line of research, and I wouldn't expect having to research this again when reaching said end of the line.

This is the first time I am playing a race with a starting tech advantage, so I do not know whether this is standard. [Wait, no! I was playing the Kiadian who have some defensive device at start, and I don't think the same happened there - that was 1.0.3 this time I am under 1.0.4.9]

Actually there happened something that was formerly often causing crash research to not revert to normal: I found a derilict ship that gave me an advancement in the engine tech area which gave me the previous component in the line (HyperFusion Reactor HX300), research on which I happened to have almost finished when finding the ship. Maybe this inhibited the engine research area being closed correctly.

Note, that my ability to design ships with the NovaCore NX-700 engine isn't affected by this area being currently under research. Of course, I'd like it otherwise because the HyperFusion HX300 is superior, but the ship upgrader likes the NX-700 better, so I have to swap out reactors manually every now and then. So it goes.
