I know that it's a mark of grognard pride to say, "Damn the fancy graphics, it's the gameplay that matters," but in this case I can genuinely say THANK YOU to the designers for abandoning some of those earlier designs. Even if a few of those were only draft designs to facilitate beta testing of other features, I'm glad the game turned out the way it did. While fancy graphics can't save a bad wargame, lousy graphics do ruin good ones. Particularly clunky, uninformative and downright ugly graphics. The graphics need to match the caliber of the game, convey the necessary information to the player *and* enable an entertaining level of suspension of disbelief. The released version of WITE did all that! (Well, okay, to be greedy I'd ask for even more chrome in places... I like lots of WWII equipment photos and stuff, I'm always happy running into them in game databases, hint-hint).
