the evolution of the game reminds me of all the old games i played

thanks for the first picture, it puts a smile on my face as it sort of reminded me of a game way,way back before I started playing Gary's games....

took me a while to remember but it was Eastern Front and was my addiction in the 1980's..
lol..color and 8-bit tech made you feel like a king back then..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_(video_game)

again thanks for memories.....

now where is my trs-80 model 1 with my tape-recorder and my copy of bismark....need a massive flashback....

one last thing.
see if you could put this picture in the game somewhere for the people who have followed you from the start...i remember looking at the box in the store and having it put on layaway. good times..changed my avatar for a week to honour the memory.

Those earliest screenshots look a bit like the old War in Russia. The game has certainly come a long ways from that.

Bump

I want to show all the people who joined the WitE forum after the release how much the game has changed since the Alpha testing began in 2008. Really we all worked a lot to make this great game!

I know that it's a mark of grognard pride to say, "Damn the fancy graphics, it's the gameplay that matters," but in this case I can genuinely say THANK YOU to the designers for abandoning some of those earlier designs.  Even if a few of those were only draft designs to facilitate beta testing of other features, I'm glad the game turned out the way it did.

While fancy graphics can't save a bad wargame, lousy graphics do ruin good ones.  Particularly clunky, uninformative and downright ugly graphics.  The graphics need to match the caliber of the game, convey the necessary information to the player *and* enable an entertaining level of suspension of disbelief.

The released version of WITE did all that!

(Well, okay, to be greedy I'd ask for even more chrome in places... I like lots of WWII equipment photos and stuff, I'm always happy running into them in game databases, hint-hint).
