Am I doing something wrong here? I creat a human-controlled sub TF, send it out to loiter around somewhere, and find that it eventually runs short of fuel and ammo and just sits there! I find a sub hexes from home with 0 fuel. Happens also with SCs.

Now, I know I set it to Patrol/Do not retire, but I expect the skipper to *know* when he is bingo fuel, or out of torps, and return automatically. But he doesn't. ("Sorry, men, our orders are to patrol, and we ain't movin' until the brass tells us too" :-)>

And I had a devil of a time getting a task force of BBs to bombard Munda. Set the TF to Patrol/Do Not Retire, sent it to bombard Munda (gave it adequate CAP too). TF goes to Munda, bombards, and then starts for home. What?? Somebody's Fitness Report ain't gonna look so good. This happened time after time. I thought it would just stay in the hex and bombard every turn, but no -- every turn I'd find it half-way to Noumea. Seems to change to Retirement Allowed and heads for home.

Can we courtmartial and shoot these guys? Cowardice in the face of the enemy?

Your #1 is true , however I have seen them return ( slowly )home when they are out of operational points.

The Game was really designed I think to have the Subs under Computer Control.

Like you, I prefer to run them myself so you need to monitor their status closely.

At the start of each turn I pull them up and check for damage, fuel and torps remaining, and decide if they need to be brought home. I also change the Base of the S Boats I have near Rabual to Cairns. Later in the war I will rebase some of the Fleet Boats there as well.

#2 That`s how it works, you need to change it back to Bombard, also check your TF leader rating. The TF commander`s are not really " stupid", at least the ones with high ratings ;)

I think that ( ratings ) will effect them if they stay there in the second go-around...sometime they will , sometimes they won`t, also set their base for Lungaville, and have an AO TF nearby to refuel if your gunna keep running them in....

Check out Spooky`s UV Site for much helpful TF use Info....

Also might check the available ammo for the main guns on the ships of the bombardment force.

An aggressive commander with a bombarment mission may still retire if low or out of main gun ammo (which can be a good thing).
