JFBs,
Is it, in your experience, worthwhile to route the convoys through mostly shallow water hexes to hopefully decrease the threat from allied submarines? Or is it just adding unnecessary miles to the journey resulting in lower efficiency/higher fuel consumption with no effect on the safety of the trip? I'm thinking about the long ones, eg. from Palembang to Japan, Pt Arthur and Shanghai seems to be obvious.

Personally, I let the computer plan the route for the most part. It'll move around suspected enemy subs. My opponent does have a few favorite stomping grounds and I avoid them, except for ASW forces.

Try and stick to shallow water. It's tougher for subs to operate in the shallows

Mostly shallow China Sea is your friend...this of course if you escort your convoys.

And cover the chokepoints with ASW patrols, both ships and aircraft.

I do let the computer set the route's by sometimes selecting a safer route rather than "Direct" but escorts are nice but you can't escort everything so I prefer to send out ASW TF patrols in the area's where I know the Americans are stomping around in. LOL. Yeah, Air ASW patrols are good too but not that effective until you get your experience up a bunch. Difficult especially early on in the war when you haven't had enough time to train them sufficiently for this job. :-)

Shallows friendly...

Use escorts to prevent subs attacking from surface, even if they have no ASW.
