How do you do it? Those built at a planet will but I can't get the ones around neutron stars, black holes etc to upgrade. I'vr tried sending constutionships but there's no option to upgrade them, sorry retrofit.

Seems to me the only way to upgrade a station not on a colony is to retire it and build a new one. There is no retrofit option for such stations, I've tried ordering a constructor around and also building a station with shipyard included.

I did manage to somehow glitch my way to the retrofit menu once but it didn't actually do anything after I ordered the upgrade.

Same here. I've had to rebuild new ones in place of the old ones.

Functionality where a construction ship retrofits bases would be most welcomed!  I would also use it on gas/mining station!

One way of doing it would be to include a construction yard + component plants on the research station. I haven't tested it, but in theory, it should work. When I'll start a new game, I'll give it a try. You'd have access to the retrofit function when you right click the station.

Allowing Construction ships to retrofit bases in deep space is on our wish list.

You can retrofit ships in said station but not the station itself, I think.
